We recently connected with Genesis and have shared our conversation below.
Genesis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
I’ve recently been thinking a lot about how we expect our closest family and friends to be the most supportive for our “little “businesses that we create, but that is a very flawed assumption. We need to realize that people are innately selfish and it’s not to be seen in a negative light but people engage with content and products or services that bring them the necessary satisfaction. So when business owners expect their family and friends to be their biggest fans, you will likely be disappointed. All of this didn’t make sense to me until I read or heard some thing somewhere that the reason why this happens is because our friends and family are not our target audience. When we drill this into our minds, we will lower our expectations for the people we love and prevent building resentment in our hearts . They are allowed to support us in other ways. Maybe we just need to open our eyes to see what that support looks like from their end.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up low income and I am dedicating my life to helping BIPOC communities to reach financial freedom and not feel shame in their financial journeys, no matter what stage of that journey they’re in. That is how I want people to remember me.
I first started my contact creation journey when I thought writing was the way to reach my target audience. I found out quickly that blogs were not for me. Then I proceeded to attempt posting pictures on Instagram with very powerful captions but that also didn’t feel right.
I was sitting in front of the couch one day while watching TV and I took some time to process and ask myself. “Why have I not been pursuing my dreams?” My most immediate response was “I don’t have time.” But mow many of us use that as an excuse to deviate from the things that bring us the most joy?
From that night, I decided that I would create a new TikTok account and post one video per day until I hit 10 K followers. It became an outlet for me to communicate my thoughts, my ideas, and my advice. There is nothing more powerful than failing over and over again to finally taste victory.
With my platform, I am constantly giving out as much advice as I possibly can, and inspiring others to be smart with their money, and not be afraid to invest like many children of immigrants are. This journey is brand new to me, and I am still learning so much along the way, but I’m excited to have a clear direction and mission. I know that I am on this earth to be the voice for low income communities. How am I going to make that voice louder? I’m still figuring that out.

How did you build your audience on social media?
People will say it over and over again but most people refuse to listen because of it’s simplicity. The only way to find success on social media is through volume. You will not learn what your audience likes or does not like unless you post anything and everything. Commit to a posting schedule and do not let yourself down.
Any advice for managing a team?
I aim to do all things with a genuine and empathetic heart. I have found that my success is rooted in me staying true to myself and my values. When you are managing a team, it is so important to remember that the people around you have their own valuable, lived experiences that need to shine through whatever task you have assigned them to do.
Transparency goes along way in building rapport with your team, and in order to have transparent conversations, you need to be genuine in how you show up along with empathetic.
