Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gene Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Gene, thanks for joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
Our community is the absolute best! Hearing feedback from parents & coaches about our platform, and how it’s impacting the lives of young athletes, makes everything worth it. Here are two great example reviews:
“My daughter has seen her AU coach three times so far. The difference in her confidence is so awesome, and it’s all because of our coach. She’s learning so much from her!”
“My daughter just completed tryouts for her travel township team, and she’s moving up from the B (2nd) team to the A team. We are proud of her and thank our AU coach for helping her develop!”
Gene, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My wife and I created Athletes Untapped together after playing college sports (me: Johns Hopkins basketball, my better half: Temple soccer). Once our playing days ended, we started private sports coaching to stay involved with the game & earn extra income – and we loved it! Realizing there wasn’t a go-to platform meant to help private sports coaches scale their business – like Airbnb does with rentals, or Rover for dog walkers – we decided to build Athletes Untapped. We’ve seen the impact private coaching & individual or small group lessons can make on a young athlete’s life trajectory, so that’s why we’re self-funding this business and using our backgrounds in tech to grow it.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve built this business on the side for the past three years while maintaining a full-time job. The amount of chances I had to quit were endless – but I believe in our mission and knew we had the chance to create something special for the youth sports community.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. He ran Nike (initially called Blue Ribbon) on the side for 8 years before jumping into the business full-time. Learning about his story was eye opening for me as a business owner. It takes time to build a business and successful ventures aren’t created overnight. Just stick with it, and don’t forget your ‘why’!
