We were lucky to catch up with Genai Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Genai, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Moving to Garland, Texas, from Conway, Arkansas, was a defining moment in my life. Leaving behind everyone I knew to start a financial advising career was terrifying, but I was determined to make it work. With no family, friends, or safety net, the transition was tough—I had to build a network from scratch, gain trust, and push myself out of my comfort zone.
Over time, my persistence paid off. I found clients who believed in me, colleagues who supported me, and a community that made Garland feel like home. That leap taught me the value of resilience and showed me that growth comes from taking risks. Garland didn’t just give me a career—it gave me confidence and a story of perseverance.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m from England, Arkansas, and I’ve always had a passion for numbers, which led me to major in mathematics. As an avid sports lover, I excelled in basketball—being 6’1 definitely helped! My career began in banking, but I soon realized I wanted to dream bigger and help people achieve their long-term financial goals. That’s what brought me to financial advising. I approach each client uniquely but with the same tenacious work ethic, treating their goals as my own. I’m most proud of helping clients turn dreams into reality, whether it’s saving for retirement, buying a home, or building wealth for the future. My brand is built on trust, hard work, and a commitment to seeing clients succeed from start to finish.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to think success required reading every book, earning every designation, and attending every happy hour or dinner to get on a team. But I learned it’s about working smarter, not harder. I focused on organization, joining boards, meeting as many people as possible, and consistently following up. Building genuine connections, staying in touch through good and bad times, and confidently asking for referrals became the keys to my growth.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I knew my stature, look, and background made me stand out, but I wanted to redefine the role itself. Building trust by thoroughly explaining my processes and decisions was key. Consistently showing up for client events, celebrating their milestones, and recognizing their families—especially their kids and grandkids—helped me create meaningful connections that set me apart in the market.
