We were lucky to catch up with GEMZ Dance Chapter recently and have shared our conversation below.
GEMZ, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
G.E.M.Z Dance Chapter has been serving communities since 2018. We hope to not only be affiliated with eastern Michigan but to spread women empowerment within the communities. Some meaningful projects we’ve accomplished has been hosting dance class for the local Ypsilanti area, as well as traveling to other universities.
GEMZ, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Precious Green, and I am the founder of G.E.M.Z Dance Chapter. I wanted to create a strong sisterhood on the EMU campus, as well as a safe space for new dancers to develop. G.E.M.Z is EMU’s first known majorette squad, and we are an excellent extracurricular for individuals who enjoy dancing.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building GEMZ’s target demographic was quite simple because the intended audience will be college students. It all began with a website and an Instagram account. Following mutual friends to individuals who may have been interested in our organization has been a huge success. Many of our members discovered us through a social media advertisement. Due to fliers being displayed and other factors, all of our participants attended our dance courses. Promoting is important for our organization since it helps bring attention to our sisterhood.
Those who are looking to gain a better social media presence, consistency is the key! And also engaging with your followers will build a more trusting relationship as well.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Artists, particularly emerging artists, deserve to be recognized. Everyone starts somewhere, and the most society can do is to support artists. This can include like a photo, posting a blog, streaming music, and so on. Society needs to understand that we are not attempting to satisfy their expectations, but rather that our work will be appreciated and heard.
