We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ge Bai . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ge below.
Ge , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
From my point of view, creative services serve both clients and end users. Fulfilling end users’ physical and emotional needs and helping people achieve their goals can help out clients’ success and, in turn, benefit ourselves. With this in mind, it’s easy to get inspiration by observing end users’ behavior.
For example, in my capstone project, I tried to reinvent the demised shopping mall by redefining teenage hangout space in the shopping mall. The idea comes from a field survey. While documenting a demised shopping mall, I saw many teenagers gathering in the outside parking lot. I wondered why they would rather spend time outside than enter the mall. After doing online surveys and questionnaires, I discovered that teenagers still want to hang out in malls. However, under the impact of the internet, big-box stores, and the unpredictable COVID-19, ghosty malls are unsafe for teens to hang out.
As a result, I tried to tie teenagers’ customer experience with the demised malls, providing a safe and satisfying space for teenagers to hang out, which can also increase the mall’s profit. It can be a success because we created a win-win situation working with service providers and end users.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Thank you for inviting me to share my story with CanvasRebel Readers. I’m Ge Bai, moved to the U.S. in 2019 for my master’s degree at SCAD. I work at BHDP Architecture as an interior designer with our retail team. Most of my projects are finding new merchandise solutions for traditional grocery stores and superstores. Now, the shop-in-shop idea is a huge trend in the retail market. It’s a great sense of fulfillment when witnessing our solutions can elevate the shoppers’ experience and benefit our clients. I enjoyed brainstorming with our teams, doing quick sketches, and visualizing our ideas in 3D models. Getting input from clients and refining our project is also an exciting part of learning and keeping up with the market.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I recommend designers always keep an eye on industry leader firms’ press and research. Especially for students who feel lost touch with the industry, it’s always a great chance to get cutting-edge insights and gain inspiration from the new press. The knowledge can arm you to be more confident in preparing for your career.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
LinkedIn is the best resource for me to connect with professionals and quickly browse new projects. I will share my status when I make career progress or need professional recommendations. A complete Linkedin profile and professional website with great UI/UX design can help people remember and trust you/your brand. Instagram is also an excellent resource for sharing your brand with broader users.
