We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gayle Price a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gayle, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have been singing, essentially, all of my life. Growing up with a mother who had her own hit record in 1955, there was so much music already in my blood. I enjoy singing because its a deep expression into words, notes and melodies. It tells a story and I love how it leaves a lasting impression, just makes me feel good.
I did not get serious about pursuing singing until about 5 years ago. Having children at a later age in life, I felt I needed to be mom for them before I decided to pursue music. I have started my own band about 4 years ago and truly love what I do. Its hard work and I truly wished I would’ve gotten more serious about singing early on, it would have given me a good foundation for my future self. But, you are NEVER too old to live your dream and I am living my dream and enjoying every minute of it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a female vocalist born and raised in Kansas City, KS that began singing at the age of 5 in my grandfathers church. Growing up, my mother had a huge influence on my musical talents. The late Priscilla Bowman had a #1 record on the billboard charts in 1955 for 2 weeks in a row. Although I was not yet born, she was laying a musical foundation for her offspring. I am the youngest of 2 children from my mother, and the oldest of 3 by my father.
I’ve always loved musicals, and anything on television that involved music. Theme songs, game shows, etc, anything that involved singing.
I have been married for 20yrs and we have 2 children, 21 and 16. Balancing my musical career, motherhood, being a wife, work and other responsibilities hasn’t been easy, but its been worth it. To see my hard work paying off and to know that I have left at least 1 person in the audience with a smile on their face is one of my goals. I believe music is universal and brings people together in a good way. There is so much to be worried about in this world, music allows you to set those worries down, even if its just for a moment. I have learned valuable nuggets in this business and always try to share those nuggets with others. Keeping your commitments, being fair, being honest, and also being understanding go a long way in this industry. I’ve also learned that everyone will NOT be happy for you. Sometimes entertainers are like crabs in a barrel and they dont need to be. There are plenty of opportunities out here for everyone and it doesnt mean that your not valued in your craft. Everyone brings a unique sound, a unique style. I believe my style is more for the older crowd as my covers are older songs that have been and are still popular. Staying in your uniqueness is what makes you valuable in your craft. I’m 55 and not your typical size 8 singer and I’m ok with that, I know exactly what my style brings and I’m happy about that. I’ve had tons of solo opportunities that have furthered my musical roots allowed me to land an ensemble role in the local musical stage play The Color Purple at the Warwick Theater. The the sold out shows and experience was amazing and allowed me to step out of my confort zone. I will definitely be trying my hand at acting again.
Starting the Pure Sweetness Entertainment Band in 2018 has been an amazing experience. Getting our feet wet and perfecting our sound has been our mission since day one. I’m proud of what we have accomplished thus far and what our future holds. Whether you are looking for R&B, Pop, Rock, Gospel or Country music, we are able to bring you all in one show and we add the perfect accent to any event.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Support is so essential in the music industry. The word “support” takes on many forms; sharing social media posts, coming to shows, referrals, etc. There are so many ways to show your support. I think, at times, as an artist we feel like showing support for another artist that is in the same field as you is not needed, but it is. Again, it goes back to knowing what your uniqueness is. I love the fact that we have soo many talented singers in the KC Metro area……our town is loaded with talented musicians and singers. We are a hidden gem in the midwest.
I believe local organizations, need to highlight these hidden gems on a more consistent basis. Just because you havent heard of someone doesnt mean that they arent amazing. Getting the word out about local artist is essential to keeping live entertainment alive in KC.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is knowing that when I have finished my song or finished my set for the evening that someone, even if its just 1 person, is pleased with my performance. Someone was listening, someone heard the dedication, the sincerity in the song that Im singing. Thats the most rewarding thing about music. To know that what God gave me I have used it to the best of my abilities and it has left someone with a good feeling.
