Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gavin Raetz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gavin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
One very important lesson I have learned from my time as a photographer is to take the time to enjoy my work. I often find myself rushing and/or stressing about every little thing as I want to make sure the photos I deliver are beautiful and executed to the best of my ability. Trying to make sure the client receives exactly what they want while also maintaining all of the equipment and making sure that the product is delivered in a timely manner often causes me to overthink even the simplest of techniques. By pausing and allowing myself to take a deep breath and savor the experience, I find that my work not only becomes more authentic but also more aligned with the passion that drew me to photography in the first place.
Gavin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I actually got into photography during the start of the pandemic! I was laid off from my job and quickly found myself bored and looking for a new hobby. I decided that I would get an actual camera (instead of just my phone camera) and see where it took me. I quickly found that I absolutely LOVED taking photos and just seeing the raw emotions on people’s faces when I got the perfect portrait of them, or the way their eyes lit up when they saw one of my nature/landscapes sold me right away. Now, almost five years and three camera upgrades later, I still love what I do, and I get to travel to beautiful places, but I also get to meet SO many beautiful people.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission with photography is to learn as much as I possibly can. There is a vast array of different photography styles, techniques, and approaches that each offer something unique. I am obsessed by the endless possibilities that photography presents, and I am committed to exploring and understanding as many of them as I can.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has undoubtedly been word of mouth. There’s something so incredibly powerful about personal recommendations! Word of mouth not only brings in clients who have already seen and liked my work, but it also allows us to form long-term relationships. These clients often come to me with a trust and confidence, knowing that their friends, family, or colleagues have had great results with me previously!
