We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gavin Gone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gavin below.
Gavin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
After I knew that DJ’ing and producing music was a career path I wanted to pursue. I hoped on YouTube trying to learn anything and everything that I could. It was overwhelming to say the least. Just starting out I wish I took a more structured approach to learning the craft rather than trying to learn everything all at once. For years I would hop from different YouTube tutorials trying to learn everyone’s secret tricks but it wasn’t until I attended ICON Collective School of Music in Los Angeles, California that everything changed. At ICON, I learned the skills that I was lacking the most, the basics and rules for making music. Starting out, making “good” music is extremely hard but with the right understanding of the basics and fundamentals of music, slowly my tracks became better and better.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up in the creativity rich Brooklyn, NY I was exposed to so much creativity and culture that makes New York such a unique city. At a young age my parents always exposed me to music, anything from 80s pop to underground electronic mixes. It was in those electronic mixes I first fell in love with that type of music, I was obsessed. Listening to different forms of electronic music always sparked my creativity but it wasn’t until I was around 10 years old when I discovered DJ’ing from an old Deadmau5 video on YouTube. After watching that video I was hooked. Day and night all I wanted to do was learn more about DJ’ing and electronic music since in the early 2010’s there weren’t many resources out there for those looking to get into the craft. With a lot of trial and error, I started to put myself out there as I got older and landed my first DJ residency at 16. Since that first residency my career has grown tenfold. While I’ve accomplished many things I didn’t know were possible for me, one of the moments that stands out to me is opening for world renowned House Dj, Cloonee. What made this moment so special for me was that I had just seen Cloonee at the Brooklyn Mirage 6 weeks prior and had no clue that soon enough I’d be opening for him.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support your artist friends! A simple share of your friends art can make a worlds difference. Start at the bottom when sharing love and support, go to that show with artists you’ve never heard of, take some pictures and videos of the artist preforming. Little things like this mean a lot for an artist chasing exposure.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
For anybody looking to be creative the best thing you can do to help unlock your creativity is to study the artist mindset. With the right mindset you can find inspiration in everyday things or in unconventional ways. For me, one of my favorite creative exercises is finding a piece of artwork that I really enjoy and trying to write a song that fits the picture.
