We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gavin Bacher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gavin below.
Gavin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
The creative process is deeply personal. I like to think about it like the process of getting ready in the morning. Everyone has their own routine. A way they either get ready the fastest, the best most productive way, or the way that makes them the most comfortable. Some people are really open about this process. They share it online or with the people they live with. Some take this routine as something super sacred. They share it with no one and if they do it’s only with the people closest to them. Sometimes these morning routines are chaotic with toothpaste everywhere and clothes thrown out of the closet in a giant pile. At the same time, others have a list or are very organized with it. All this to say the creative process is DEEPLY unique to the creative.
My process starts very simple. With a big YES! A part about being a creative like me (a designer that mainly works on projects for graphic design, social media, and marketing) collaboration is a big part of my world and my process. With any creative the project most likely starts with this: “Hey! Would you like to work on this for me/with me?”. As long as said project doesn’t go against your moral code or isn’t totally ridiculous in the scope of reality, I like to make the habit of saying yes. This is the very foundation of a good successful creative.
Whether it’s freelance or a creative job the next step in my process is a good ole’ conversation. COMMUNICATION IS THE BACKBONE OF ALL DESIGN! I like to meet with the client or other creatives and bounce some ideas and feelings for what we are trying to accomplish. I think the most important part of this process is a lot like the first. NEVER SAY NO! I compile all the ideas together without separating the crazy outlandish ones from the rest. After this I take a break! Walk away from your ideation. Once you come back things will look a little clearer… they always do! You never know, those crazy outlandish ideas might be the magic touch and you might never know if you don’t walk away for a second.
Never forget the research. It’s sometimes boring or feels minuscule but this can make or break the design in many ways.
The “last” is fabrication. Within this step, ideation is still very much alive. Continuing to grow and shift perspective and create the most sound design through the process of working in whatever software or material you use to create.
Now make the leap! Give it to the world!
Once designs are finalized and have been distributed there is one key component that a lot of designers neglect. Thats review. Looking at your finished work in the hands of an audience. How do they convey your work? Was it effective? What could I have done better? This final piece of research is a valuable case study for your future projects!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a designer who loves philosophy, society, and growth! I specialize in Adobe software and my work ranges from strategy, graphic design, creative marketing, and much more. I love doing and exploring all things! Recently my interests have ranged from exploring new design systems to studying philosophy and human thought. I found that these skills go hand in hand more than you would think. On top of this, I’m still in school getting my B.F.A in Advertising and Branding! Within my collegiate journey, I have found the magic of saying YES! I hold a couple of positions in various jobs all ranging in creative marketing and design. They include working for organizations in social growth or change, interning for my department, and a few others! My goal for the next couple of months is to grow a personal following on my Instagram! Pushing ideas of radical self-growth and understanding as well as design tips of course!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of the creative industry for me is the importance of collaboration. As creatives, we fuel each other in the most beautiful ways. I’ll walk into a room of fellow advertising creatives and the creative energy is felt in the room. Bouncing ideas off the walls into each other minds. It’s truly invigorating!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The biggest source of clients when in the creative industry is the creatives! Creatives are the backbone of a lot of industries. Once you start growing your network with creatives whether it’s in courses, exhibitions, or on social, your opportunities grow tremendously.
