We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gary Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Gary , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?

I am incredibly happy as an artist and a creative. Entertainment is in my DNA. Entertainment is what I was born to be part of. By the time I was five, I knew what I wanted to do. Anything to do with dancing, singing, and performing on TV or in movies and I couldn’t stop watching.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I started dance class when I was 5, followed by vocal lessons and drum lessons. At 13 I did my first professional theatre show and got paid. After High School, I left my small town and began pursuing an entertainment career. I’ve danced for Disney World, performed on an International Cruise Ship, entertained in Shanghai, and danced for Legends in Concert in Las Vegas.
I phased out of performing a few years ago and moved to the production side of the business. Now, I create live shows and events. I can provide simple background entertainment for an intimate party or create a full-blown production show. Clients of mine have included Gurus Magazine, Playboy, Wahl, and General Motors of Latin America.
My latest creation is WHISKEY, a bold and immersive live show featuring a dynamic cast of singers, dancers, musicians, and more. WHISKEY is a high-energy blend of cabaret, club, and rock music. What sets me apart from others…I’m an original. I’m Gary Thomas. No one thinks like me or creates like me. I follow my gut. I listen to the client. And, I do my best to create the best entertainment I can.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

One of the coolest things about my career has been traveling. I’ve been to places I never thought I’d go to. And in some cases never thought of going. I lived in Shanghai for a year performing in an American dance show called Red Hot. I spent 8 weeks in Tokyo choreographing a show. I lived on an International cruise ship for a year. We went from New York to Bermuda and then San Juan to Antigua, Martinique, and St. Lucia.
Because of my career, I’ve traveled extensively around the US. I’ve experienced big-city life in NY, LA, and Vegas. And, I’ve had more laid-back experiences performing and teaching throughout the South.
Meeting people from other countries and learning about other cultures is priceless.
The experience has taught me that no matter where in the world you are. People are more alike than they are different.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

I WISH I had a cool story to tell you about building a social media audience, but the truth is I’m in the process of doing that. I’m still learning when it comes to building an audience on social media. Some days I feel like I’ve nailed it and a post of mine kicks ass. Then the next day I post something and…nothing.
So, for everyone reading this. If you’ve got some knowledge you can pass on, I am open to learning.
No matter what your career is or what industry you’re part of I think it’s important to be open to learning something new.
