We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gary Randall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gary, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
In my past vacations were to places that were close to Nature and away from places that gather people. Being a photographer whose primary purpose is to create images of Nature, I spent a lot of time at places where I’d be taking vacations to otherwise. I don’t feel compelled to escape my “job”.
Gary, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Gary Randall and I’m a professional photographer. My primary purpose is to create fine art landscape photos including large custom prints, but my business includes other forms of photography as well as conducting landscape and wildlife photography tours and workshops. I’m also a public speaker and a writer concentrating primarily on photography and travel. I love to help and encourage new photographers.
I’ve been a photographer since I was a boy, mostly as a hobby, but I transitioned into photography as a business after becoming disillusioned with the career that I had followed previously. I had spent time in the past learning photography, including working in the darkroom developing and enlarging my photos, and was able to bring that experience, coupled with my computer background, with me as I started my new career as a digital photographer. This allowed me to embrace the world of modern photography.
I’m glad that I’ve been able to be successful in a field that has become so popular and easily pursued by many people today.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
As a professional photographer it’s typical to have several streams of income. They all can be photography related, such as commercial, portraiture, real estate or weddings. In addition to that most everyone relies on the Internet to find information or instruction and so having eBooks and/or a YouTube channel with tutorials teaching what you do available is another way to expand your income.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me being an artist gives me the feeling that I’m doing what I’m meant to do. Ever since I was a child I loved to draw and paint. At a very early age I fell in love with photography but it wasn’t until later in my life that I found a way to combine my love of art and my love of photography. Since then I’ve felt as if I have found my purpose.
Although my work as a photographer certainly is rewarding it’s the result of my work and how it affects others that’s the most rewarding. As an artist we’re performers that have an audience. Those whom you attract with your art will be attracted because of an emotional connection or a feeling that they get when they experience your art. And so I feel that the most rewarding part of being an artist, for me, is how it affects others in such amazing ways.
