We were lucky to catch up with Gary Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gary, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Get it in writing and know your worth. I can’t emphasize this enough. I had a CEO promise streaming rights, content monetization, and more money as we went along. I felt good after our meeting and after a while none of those things came to promise.
They didn’t want to create streaming content. They didn’t want to monetize content, and my pay remained significantly below market rate and even State minimum wage for salary.
My content for them was in the millions of views and they still utilize my content strategy as well as my content and I was let go.
When I got there they weren’t using release forms for video and that should’ve been a huge red flag.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Greetings to all the curious minds out there! Allow me to introduce myself – I am Gary John Miller, a creative spirit with an insatiable passion for the world of artistic expression. If you haven’t heard about me before, now’s the perfect time to dive into the essence of who I am and what I do.
My journey into the realm of creativity started with an unquenchable thirst to explore and experiment. From a young age, I found solace and excitement in the act of creating, whether it was through writing, performing, or visual arts. This fascination eventually paved the way for my involvement in the film industry, where I discovered my knack for taking on challenges head-on and leaving no stone unturned.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to my craft. I thrive on heavy workloads and relish the intricate details that bring a project to life. In an industry where obstacles and setbacks can derail even the most ambitious endeavors, I pride myself on my determination to see things through, regardless of the hurdles that arise. I’ve been a part of film production companies that faced setbacks and quit projects – a notion that’s simply unfathomable to me. When I commit to a project, I bring my Coloradoan spirit to the forefront – resilient, unyielding, and ready to overcome any challenge.
One of the cornerstones of my work is problem-solving. I embrace the complexities that come with each project and find innovative solutions to bring ideas to fruition. Whether it’s in the realm of film, writing, or any creative endeavor, I thrive on tackling challenges headfirst. My experience extends to collaborating with film production companies, where I’ve been part of remarkable projects like “Dick Virginia,” “Good Kids Daad City” by The Dads, and a recent collaboration with Loste Films. Each endeavor has taught me the importance of determination, collaboration, and pushing creative boundaries.
I am immensely proud of the projects I’ve poured my heart and soul into. These experiences have not only shaped my artistic journey but have also strengthened my belief in the power of creativity to connect, inspire, and challenge the norm. With a portfolio that reflects my passion for writing, performing, and film production, I invite you to explore my world at garymillercomedy.com.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that when you work with me, you’re not just collaborating with a creative mind – you’re partnering with a problem solver, a tenacious visionary, and a storyteller who thrives on bringing dreams to life. Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Absolutely, I’ve come across some truly impactful resources that have deeply influenced my management and entrepreneurial thinking. Among the numerous books I’ve read, a few have truly stood out and shaped my philosophy:
“Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert: I vividly recall listening to this book during a road trip with my wife. It not only helped her better understand me, but it also provided me with fresh creative techniques and a deeper self-awareness. Gilbert’s insights into creativity and the creative process resonated with me on a profound level.
“Poking a Dead Frog” by Mike Sacks: This book holds a special place in my heart. Given to me as a gift by Bob Odenkirk on my 22nd birthday, it was an unexpected and meaningful gesture. Sacks’ exploration of humor and creativity has since guided my approach to entrepreneurship and storytelling.
“The Enchiridion” by Epictetus: This timeless work laid a sturdy foundation for my mindset. Its teachings on self-discipline, resilience, and personal growth have been invaluable in shaping my approach to challenges and opportunities.
“Romo – My Life on the Edge: Living Dreams and Slaying Dragons” – Being an admirer of football, I was drawn to this book early on. Bill Romanowski’s journey towards excellence, dedication, and the candid portrayal of both triumphs and struggles served as a compelling lesson in commitment and its rewards.
“Forrest Griffin – Got Fight?” – My preference for stories of individuals who overcome adversity led me to Forrest Griffin’s book. His unyielding toughness and the advice he shares resonated deeply. The book’s structure provided insights that I’ve integrated into my own approach to challenges.
Collectively, these resources have played an integral role in shaping my entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy. They’ve reinforced the importance of resilience, creative exploration, and maintaining an unwavering dedication to one’s pursuits.
