We were lucky to catch up with Gary John Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gary John, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful currently is my solo show that I will be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. The show is called Goof and it’s a coming of age story about not really feeling like I’ve ever come of age. It’s meaningful to work on a story that is very stripped down and raw but humorous and lively.
I talk about experiencing scary movies at too young an age, becoming really good at drinking alcohol and how that didn’t win me a gold medal in anything, notions I had of being an adult and whether these rites of passage create adults.
The question Gary John Miller: Goof asks is, “if I was the person I needed when I was young, would I even listen to me?”
It will be performed August 1-25th in Edinburgh, UK at Just The Tonic The Caves every day at 12 and in the second half 12:10. It’s a perfect lunch time show for anyone who wants a show and something to eat.

Gary John, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

How did you build your audience on social media?
I became monetized on social media as a challenge to myself. I had an employer that initially promised me they would provide compensation through their channels on monetization and never fulfilled that. I wanted to see if I could and within a year I accomplished that on my own channels by being consistent in posting and creating relevant content in my niche.
I would advise people to find a niche they want to focus on and only post about that for the time being. Be an arrow and focus before you become too broad.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s a challenging and hard lifestyle. I love the fact that it’s hard and nobody cares whether you succeed or fail. I put pressure on myself to complete the projects I set out to do. Completing a creative journey like a comedy album, film, series, or book is so rewarding. It takes holding yourself accountable and also giving yourself grace to put your creative work out there. It helps to kill perfectionism and enjoy the creative process.
