Gary, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?

Getting people to see the cane as s great and needed self-defense tool

Master Gary Hernandez (School Owner and Head Instructor) Master Gary Hernandez is a 6th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do,The RDT System (Realistic Defensive Tactics),Hapkido, 5th Degree in Kickboxing (The Bill Wallace Superfoot System) and 5th Degree Canemasters. Mr. Hernandez started Martial Arts in 1978. He is a 41 year veteran of the Martial Arts. He has also trained in various Martial Arts styles: Judo, Kenpo, Muay Thai,
One of the things I do differently than most schools today is I teach real world combat for the streets.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Having to change from teaching straight traditional old world martial arts into more of a combative street fighting system that’s needed now.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?

For many years I was using a billing service and for 10 years they were great until one of the higher up’s embezled from the company so every money that was drawn from my My students that paid me so for a full month I had no payment coming in from the students but had to pay all my bills plus my bills plus still had to train them all basically that month for free. After that I started building the students myself and it’s been good ever since.
