Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Garrow Kedigian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Garrow, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
I was lucky enough to work for the renowned interior designer William Hodgins right out of architecture school- although he was really tough, and believe me he would never cut it as an employer today!, he was very stringent and fastidious… I literally learned everything I know about this business workmen for him for 6years
Garrow, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My work as an interior designer is mainly recognizable through my use of color- I love saturated colors , and although my style can really be defined as traditional, my use of deep and rich colors really gives all of my spaces a more modern / streamlined classic look …
I am trained as an architect – originally from Canada I attended the McGill school of architecture -and I think one of the major things that defines my work is the architectural scope of background work we for for all our interiors – it’s a big part of what we do, designing paneling, moldings , etc…
My work is identifiable because it’s really layered and I pride myself in producing a homey feeling- I personally can’t understand how anyone can live in a white box devoid of detail and many layers of personal effects- I think one’s home needs to be a reflection of their personally and the job of the interior designer is to emanate those traits with the surroundings we fill our rooms with… it’s a very personal thing, and I often times take my clients shopping in paris early in my relationship with them – one because we can find the most amazing things and two because I think a trip with someone really gets us to know them well l, what their likes and dislikes are and helps us design more effectively for them in the end
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media for interior designers is a wonderful platform for exhibiting one’s work – I started out on instagram and mainly post on that- pictures of our interiors and a focus on the vibrant colors we use… I have a few iconic pictures which have really been received well,.. and I like to use those time to time interspersed with softer color pallets – I spend a lot of time thinking about how the feed needs to be pleasing as you scroll down and think a lot about color distribution in the grid
Another think I like to do is post my hand sketches – yes, I know old school… but I think they are received well …. And it is a good way to interact with people… Generally, I will post a few options for furniture layouts, asking people what their ideas are on those, I normally have hunderds of comments on such posts
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Interior design is a tough business – not only do you have to deal with the personalities of all your clients but also of all your vendors – when I stated out worked with an upholsterer who was quite difficult to work with – he did beautiful work and at a great price point but working with him was so torturous – you could never get an installation date out of him, and he always claimed he never received a fabric when infact the signature on the UPS delivery was his! Well that was a learning experience and I used him for almost a decade because when I started out I had clients who were really on tight budgets and I had to find a way to make it work …
