We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Garrett Knuckles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Garrett below.
Garrett, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
When I was in chiropractic school my older sister was having a lot of back pain and asked if I knew any chiropractors in the area that she should go to. I found a practice called Baker Chiropractic that seemed to have a lot of good reviews and it was close to where she lived. She ended up going there and getting great care. While I was home on break from school I went with my sister to one of her appointments and met Dr. Paul Baker. After developing a relationship with him he asked if I wanted to do my preceptorship at his practice. I started my preceptorship at Baker Chiropractic in September of 2013 and was able to do the accelerated program which allowed me to complete the 6 month preceptorship in 3 months. I graduated chiropractic school in December of 2013 and they offered me a job. So I was able to get a job there because I referred my sister to them and built a relationship through my preceptorship.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Cincinnati native and I attended Little Miami High School. While playing football I suffered an injury which ultimately lead me to seek chiropractic care for the first time. The chiropractor found a fracture in my lower back which was causing pressure on my spine. This pressure was causing lower back pain and weakness into my legs. The care and ultimate healing of my issues are what inspired me to become a chiropractor.
I was always interested in health care and I knew I wanted to pursue a career where I could help people and make a difference in their lives. Once I realized how much chiropractic care could help, I knew I wanted to become a chiropractor and help people with the same type of care that saved me from a life time of back surgeries.
After graduating from high school I attended Ohio University where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science with a focus on community health. I then attended Life University in Marietta, Ga where I graduated with my Doctorate of Chiropractic degree. I have been providing chiropractic care to the Cincinnati area for over 10 years. I worked as an associate for another chiropractor in Cincinnati for 9 years. I finally fulfilled my dream to open my own practice about 1.5 years ago.
I love helping people get back to living a happy, healthy and pain free life through chiropractic care. I am most passionate about helping pregnant women and children through chiropractic care. I practice a specific technique that can help with breech babies. I have helped numerous people who had a breech baby and wanted to avoid a C-section and that is something I’m most proud of in my professional career.
I would say the thing that sets me apart from others in my profession is my passion to help others and I truly care about helping people get out of pain and back to living their lives. People who come into my office aren’t just another person with back pain, I treat them like family and I want you to feel better as soon as possible. I will do anything I can to help someone get out of pain even if that means referring them to another professional if I think they can help them more than I can.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I graduated chiropractic school I had the dream of opening my own practice. I originally planned to work for another chiropractor for a few years and learn how to run a business. In my opinion they don’t teach you how to run a business in chiropractic school. They are great for preparing you to be a good chiropractor, but not how to run as business and just because you are a good chiropractor doesn’t mean you will be successful in business. My plan deviated a bit because I was given the opportunity to run a practice while still being an associate. This helped prepare me even more for eventually opening my own practice. This satisfied my need to “have my own practice” for a while, but I still had the dream of actually having my own practice and not just running a clinic for someone else. It was not easy to open my own practice and the thought of leaving a practice and patients that I had for many years was scary. I got comfortable in the other practice, but the dream of having my own practice was still eating at me. I finally decided to make the jump and I couldn’t be more happy that I did.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back I would still choose the same profession because I love chiropractic and I love helping people through chiropractic care. I would do things a little differently like get more involved in school and I would do have started my own practice sooner, but hindsight is 20/20.
