Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Garrett Kirk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Garrett, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
Working hard for a living is a big deal. I didn’t realise this when I was working for someone else. I never really seemed to see the finished product anywhere else I have worked. I have always hated working. Its all boiled down to production and numbers, instead of pride and passion.
There are major similarities since money is involved but I still have the freedom to do whatever the hell I want, whenever I want. With that said, we don’t believe that freedom is something is just handed to us…it’s earned and you simply can’t just “Do whatever the hell you want” these days…but in a way we can, because we are, but one thing we can assure, is that dues, in fact, have been paid by everyone on my team and it shows. We work hard and take immense pride in everything we do musically these days. I have slept on the streets and I ain’t going back.
Garrett, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
American Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist and Studio Artist from Decatur Texas, Born on August 18, 1990. At an early age of about ten years old, Garrett picked up his first guitar and is now out on his own, making his rounds doing what he loves most, making music. His discography includes a variety of genres including Country, Western, Rock and even Psychedelic instrumentals for those who just want to hear a melody. Garrett Kirk is also front man and Lead Guitarist of his own band, The Day Drifters.
Heavily influenced by Merle Haggard and Led Zeppelin, Garrett has a perfect mix for those seeking something unique. His exceptional guitar playing skills heavily accent his music truly making it a genre of its own. Garrett has played numerous Honky Tonks and Stages throughout Texas and has even spent some time in Nashville, where he shortly later decided to head back home to North Texas where he can be found making his rounds Nation Wide as he climbs his way to the top of the musical ladder.
Recognized by Google as one of Texas Top guitarist, Garrett Kirk also works as a studio Guitarist for not only his own company, Batcave Records but also Black Light Studios where he creates rythm and lead tracks for multiple genre artist with high recognition including hip hop and country artist such as Riggin Skogberg, Joe Weed, Levi Dry and Y.T. Amaya.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Not even two years ago, I was sick, and dying in a hospital bed. I was drinking almost a gallon of straight vodka a day. I was barely eating. It was bad, but by the grace of God and my love for music I snapped out of it. Now I am working steadier than I have ever imagined. I diddnt think you could do this much with music.
The struggle has definately been a real one but the reward has been well worth the risk.
We always tell war stories in our songs. For example the song me and Riggin wrote “Funky Skunky” talks alot about the hard times we have endured doing what we thought we were suppose to be doing when in fact we were on a complete path of distruction. I am very fortunate to be here today…
..I mean Riggin literally launched my new Cadillac with just under 40k miles about 3 feet in the air going 65 mph down interstate 45 and we thought nothing of it at the time
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There is nothinhg more rewarding than hearing complete strangers sing along to these songs we write. Although expectations rise daily in the music industry, this is a feeling that seems to keep us fresh and at times it holds me from throwing in the towel. It truly is a unique, one of a kind experience.
