We recently connected with Gangstead and have shared our conversation below.
Gangstead, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
To begin, we’re Hunter and Carson and we began Gangstead. With any band from any genre it’s a huge step taking your ideas and molding them into a reality, especially when that idea involves the coordination of other people. There’s a specific day in mind actually, we were sitting in the attic of an old friend and started playing around on the instruments. This wasn’t the first time we’ve done this, but it was definitely different. That’s when the conversation came back up about starting a group, and then Hunter ordered the first drum kit right there in the middle of the jam. Once we started practicing in the garage, it escalated very quickly. Within two weeks we practiced together many times, and in one day we wrote our first song Velvet Jones. It moved very fast after that and came to a point where this was becoming something more than just us jamming with each other, this was becoming something real. We’ve since bought thousands of dollars worth of equipment and sunk hundreds of man hours into our music, even when we weren’t getting gigs at all. Making that decision, taking that risk, to start spending a significant amount of time, money, and effort to turn this into a real band is a decision we’d make a million times over again.
Gangstead, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We’re Gangstead. We’re a 3 piece riff based rock’n’roll band from Colorado! We take heavy influence from bands like ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cream, and The Doors. All three of us have played music pretty much our whole lives. Hunter plays the drums and sings, he’s been playing percussion since the 4th grade. Dawson plays the bass, keyboard, and sings, he’s been doing music as long as he can remember. Carson plays guitar, he started guitar when he was about 7 years old. We pride ourselves on writing music that is authentic to us, and represents us as people and as artists. Our first album, self-titled Gangstead, has 9 original songs that we honed over hours and hours in our garage studio. We want people to know us for who we are and what we make. Playing good music to a gathering of good people is what we do all of this for.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Towards the beginning of this all Dawson had to move back home for a stint and we went without a bassist for an entire summer. Gangstead had 3 gigs coming up that were already booked, so we went with it. There was definitely a decision that had to be made, but we’re glad we played the gigs. Dawson came back, and we started recording the album with everyone.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artists is watching an idea become a recorded song. It’s a lot like building a house or cooking a nice meal. You get a sense of pride when you step back and look, or in our case listen, to what you’ve made.
