Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gale Dashner Schadewald. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Gale thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Around 15 years ago, I embarked on a journey into the world of metalsmithing with my first class. I still remember the teacher’s words: “You’re a natural.” That encouragement ignited a passion within me, driving me to soak up every bit of knowledge the class had to offer. However, as that initial class ended, I faced a dilemma. I didn’t have the necessary space to continue creating in a workshop, so I had to put my newfound skills on hold.
Five years later, I enrolled in a metalsmithing class taught by a different professor, hoping to gain fresh insights and acquire new techniques. With a new mentor and a supportive workspace built by my husband, I refined my craft. In 2014, this renewed focus led to the creation of GaleForce Design Jewelry.
For the next four years, I led a dual life. By day, I managed a steady career as a graphic design manager, and by night, I immersed myself in my creative haven at home, making jewelry nearly every evening. My jewelry found its way into art shows, galleries, and gift shops, slowly building its presence.
In the fall of 2018, I made a significant decision to leave my established career of over 11 years to fully commit to metalsmithing and freelance graphic design. This decision, although scary at first, became a pivotal moment in my entrepreneurial journey.
From taking a leap of faith to following my passion, my journey with GaleForce Design Jewelry highlights that with dedication and a willingness to embrace risk and step into the unknown, new beginnings and remarkable growth are possible.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My work revolves around crafting copper jewelry that captures the very essence of nature. Each piece is acid etched to create unique, nature inspired designs that transform everyday jewelry into wearable art.
What makes GaleForce Design Jewelry truly special is that it goes beyond just personal style—it reveals the beauty of emotions. My jewelry is functional art that helps you connect with your authentic feelings. It’s not just about how great it looks on you; it’s about how it makes you feel. I believe that jewelry should bring you joy and resonate with your inner self, making both your heart and your spirit feel good.
People often share how wearing my creations boosts their confidence and makes them feel unique and special. Many are drawn to my designs because they spark cherished memories or symbolize important moments in their lives. My jewelry, featuring bold designs, vibrant colors, and intricate patterns, mirrors the strength and beauty of nature, reflecting these qualities in the person who wears it.
Growing up, I was always outdoors, fascinated by the natural world—plants, turtles, frogs, and dragonflies were like childhood friends to me. They inspire the nature themed designs you see in my work today. Combining my love for hands-on crafting with artistic expression led to the creation of GaleForce Design Jewelry, a journey I’ve embraced wholeheartedly.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One key lesson I had to unlearn is that even though I manage every aspect of my business alone, it’s crucial to prioritize my own mental and physical well-being. As a solopreneur, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget to take care of myself. I used to push through the tough times, thinking that consistency meant never taking a break. But I’ve learned that self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.
Embracing the ups and downs of creativity and motivation and acknowledging when I need to step back and recharge, has made a huge difference. Setting boundaries and finding time for activities that boost my spirit are now a priority. It’s also valuable to connect with a community of supportive peers to share experiences and advice. This approach not only helps me stay healthy but also keeps my creative energy vibrant and sustainable.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, I wish I had known about the Larimer Small Business Development Center (SBDC) earlier in my journey. They offer fantastic support for small business owners like me, and it’s all free or low-cost. The Larimer SBDC provides personalized business counseling, practical workshops on topics like marketing and finance, and access to valuable resources and networks. They’re a great resource for anyone looking to start or grow their business, offering expert advice and tools to help navigate the challenges and opportunities along the way.
