We recently connected with Gal Yaguri and have shared our conversation below.
Gal, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
While offering standard home organization services with the shared goal of turning chaos into order, I go a little bit further in my mission: First, I treat the service as an experience, seeking to engage and excite people so they experience home organization more as a wellness practice than a chore to get done.
Second, I put deep focus on sustainability and Zero Waste. Not only do I clear all the stuff my clients get rid of at the end of each session, allowing them to see and feel the lightness that comes with stuff being removed for you by someone else, but I also highlight ways to think and be more environmentally friendly and working with what you already own.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I moved to the U.S. from Israel when I was 20 years old and began my professional career in the film and TV industry. After working for more than 20 years in the entertainment industry in production, business, and operational capacities, I accepted a job as the COO of a leadership development company.
That position allowed me to experience running day-to-day operations at a broad level and also afforded me the incredible opportunity to experience coaching, seminars, and acclaimed personal/professional development workshops.
After five years with the organization, I made a bold move, and opened my own small business, shifting my professional focus to home organization services, interior design, and project management.
Balaboste is a perfect blend of my professional skills and my passions.
The business had an organic evolution from a traditional service provider to a bespoke experience where we meet people where they are and customize solutions for thier unique needs. It is a service delivered with clients present and engaged in the session to ensure truly set things up in a way they will be able to manage and maintain independently moving forward.
Lastly, we realized there was a huge gap in service by not attending properly to the stuff clients no longer want or need. Traditionally, they would be left with the process of donating or discarding of thier unwanted stuff. We officially remove all these items at the end of each session, riding our clients of that responsiblity while giving them the promise of sustainable, eco friendly and community friendly distribution or processing of thier goods.
In addition to being the founder of Balaboste, I am also the chairwoman of the Hastings on Hudson Zero Waste taskforce. I also spearhead and run a reuse facility in Hastings on Hudson called Take It or Leave It (I can send more info on both including URLs and social media accounts).
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
A service business like home organization which focuses on wellness and theraputic aspects is hard to summarize in 140 charachters or less. Social media and other online platforms are a good place to showcase completed work and keep engagement, but isn’t the most effective tool to attract new clients.
Word of month has been the number one source of new clients for Balaboste. From former clients who recommend the work first hand, as well as friends and other professional colleagues, have all contributed to a steady, on-going source for business development and growth.
Networking and keeping in touch with those people has been key, too.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I consider our service somewhat disruptive within its marketplace. You will most likely not find us endorsing a specific product line, for example. We’re not about being trendy and cool and photogenic, like being a ‘minimalist’, for example.
Balaboste aims to fill a gap in the wellness and lifestyle industries by placing focus on how we navigate within our homes and spaces. We bring attention to what we our clients surround themselves with, and how the things they have make them feel. Then, we help them get organized to optimize for what they need.
Add to that, the dimention of Zero Waste and sustainable ways of living. We will often find ways to work with what our clients already own. Lastly, we help them physically clear things they no longer need or want, riding them of the need to donate or discard stuff themselves.
