We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gail McCauley/LifeBeginsafter50 McCauley . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gail McCauley/LifeBeginsafter50 below.
Hi Gail McCauley/LifeBeginsafter50 , thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I have been blessed to have a husband who has always supported my career decisions & always was financially successful as an entrepreneur so that I was able to pursue the jobs & career that I wanted- as long as our sons needs were taken care of. Therefore- until our sons were of driving age, (& once they entered school full day) I worked pt and/or from home (before working remotely was a ‘thing’!!!)
Once our sons were teens and driving, I worked managing a licensed model & talent agency. When the BIG recession hit, I was laid off from my job. My husband was actually the person who said to me ‘you’ve been doing this so long for someone else – why can’t you do it for yourself?’- so I thought about it- & I did! I went through the process of getting licensed as a model & talent agency and I opened my own small business.
I saw my husband working many hours and for many years as an entrepreneur and I knew what sacrifices needed to be made (a few were working way more than regular ft hours, working nights, weekends and holiday- just to name a few!!) I was a one woman show. The hours were grueling but I loved it. I soon became known as the agency in town who ‘cared’ about her talent and my agency grew each year by leaps & bounds.
For me, it was a huge leap of faith but I thanked God (& still do) daily for having a husband who supported my career choices and could support our family financially so we didn’t have to rely on my income from my agency. I still realize that to this day and STILL am extremely thankful.
I believe that taking risks help us to grow as a person. But I believe that we must take well thought out calculated risks. I’m thankful for every job I’ve ever had and believe they all led me to where I am today- a creator and influencer for 9 years! I love working both with my clients and my brands. I try very hard to negotiate deep savings regularly because every penny counts these days! I ONLY work with brands whose products I believe in and whose products I would use. I believe after all these years, that being authentic, genuine and approachable is what has helped me succeed and grow in what I do as a content creator.

Gail McCauley/LifeBeginsafter50 , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been In the fashion industry since age 16 and have worked in various capacities from managing fashion departments at large department stores to teaching fashion at the community college level, freelance writing for magazines and authoring my own diy paint technique book.
I try hard to make the ageless gals that I work with as clients feel good about how they look and what they do. I believe that being authentic in my industry is hugely important as well as building trust with both my clients and brands.
Never EVER give up! Never EVER stop doing what you love! Age is just a number!’

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
A lot of folks ask me about my social
media outreach. Before I started as an influencer/creator, I was in charge of social media for the model and talent agency I managed as well as for the VRBO that my husband and I owned. I also have helped a few other brands grow their social media before I started as an influencer/creator. I love the creativity that comes with growing different platforms. From my own personal experience, there are no ‘secrets’ here- but definitely daily hard and consistent work! But if you love it- it’s a joy!’ And I definitely love the whole business or I wouldn’t still be doing it after 9 years- particularly when my husband and many of our friends are retired.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I consider myself semi retired and that’s one of the reasons I love working as an influencer/creator. I work when I want and the amount of hours I want. I don’t pay for ANYTHING with my LifeBeginsafter50 business except my website and domain. I spend a lot of time researching at night how to grow in various areas of my business- when other folks are likely watching tv or relaxing – but again, I love it, so it’s not ‘work’’! And I love seeing the results of my growth!
