We were lucky to catch up with Gail De Giron recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gail, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I moved from Omaha to Colorado without having a job nor a place to live. Just got in the truck and moved.

Gail, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
What you want, your dreams are on the other side of fear. Fear is for people who don’t get out much. There’s a big world out there, so go get it!
I am a cosmetologist and own my own hair salon. I am also a jewelry designer when I get a chance. I have sold jewelry all around the world, in stores all across the United States. I learned I cannot devote myself to two full time jobs, so I chose to continue in the hairstylist route. Jewelry was getting to be a burnout even though I had several employees. Besides, everyone needs their hair cut, right??
Now in my new salon, I have wonderful clients and it pleases me to have a few who want more of an edgy style. I would like to have more of those people walk through my door.
If I could, I would live in Europe since there is where it feels like home. I travel alone there and let the culture and cities envelop me. London will always be my favorite. Berlin is also a wonderful place.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients are mainly word of mouth. Articles in the local paper also told the public about a new place. Instagram, collecting emails for salon specials. I sell my place by informing people about the green and safe products I use on guests, that I attend classes to keep up on the latest styles and color techniques. Use volunteer models for photos.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It was when the salon I was at had to eventually move to a new location.
There were four of us who needed a new place to work, I was the only one who wanted to jump out there and take a chance at owning a new salon. Why not? I gained clientele, they would follow. It was unnerving however, finding a place to rent that was somewhat affordable in a not so affordable town.
But it was all in God’s timing, not mine. It was if He had this planned out perfectly. I look back and now I understand why it took so long..(2 years). I met wonderful people who helped me along the way. I couldn’t have completed it without their help.
Now, I sit and look around me and still can’t believe this is my place. I can decorate how I want, listen to music I like, and have started to draw/paint a mural on one of the walls.
Yes, you can have a desk job and have benefits, the 9:00-5:00 weekends and holidays off. But WHY?
Step out there if you’re thinking about your own business. It’s so liberating to come and go and have the hours I want. Yes, there will be mistakes. There will be moments to be really successful. It is all on your terms. So worth it.
