We were lucky to catch up with Gaby Ancell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gaby , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I am of course passionate about our Jules Flower Truck business and the investment I’ve made into growing it. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg because the true investment I have made is into my daughter, Jules. To know my kind and loving daughter is to love her. She is a bright light in this world, and truly gives her heart to others. So what better way to invest in her than build up a business that she will earn by working along side me? She is learning how to talk to people, how to be present, how to share what we do, troubleshoot through mistakes or overcome obstacles.
Jules has amazing role models in her life (family, friends & teacher), but I take my role as her mom very seriously and want to do things with her, not for her. I’m a historian and educator at heart, and so I’ve been talking to and implementing support of small businesses into our own business because I think we do a good job of saying we support small business but not modeling that. How do we do that you ask? Simple, share other small business owners story, buy from them, educate others on what small businesses do, and teach your children to do so. Our country is at a pivotal point in history right now, and if we don’t make change happen now, what will “The American Dream” look like in 10, 20, or 50 years from now? Martin Luther King Jr. said a simple phrase, “I have a dream,” but it didn’t start with that speech. He preached in his congregation, he started with his own community. We have a strong knit community in Parker & Elizabeth, CO, but are we willing to put in the time and effort to do just that, support each other? I hope so. I will continue to work on this grass roots movement of mine. Join in and see our world change.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At Jules Flower Truck, we are mobile and completely customizable. If you would like a day in what goes in your bouquet give us a call. If you would like your wedding vision to come to life, give us a call. If you want to do a client or staff appreciation day where we make bouquets for them, give us a call.
We want to brighten your day and make your dreams come true. We have dabbled in a little bit of everything when it comes to flowers and Volkswagens. Our 1963 single cab Volkswagen is named Lily, Jules’ idea, and she is our hook, especially for those car lovers. And we actually have the capability to rent out our five Volkswagens for events, photo shoots, or even your getaway car on your way wedding day.
We are a Volkswagen family, and always have been. My dad used to street race his Volkswagen bug. Justin and his dad built his very first car together, which is a 1960 ragtop Volkswagen. I learned how to drive on a stick shift Isuzu Trooper, which is why I can drive any of our Volkswagens because there is no original VW that is automatic. There is something about driving one of our cars with the safari windows open, or top down that brings pure joy.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Hands down it has been my family, friends and colleagues who have cheered us on and helped whenever we have needed them to. Our people show up for us, and keep showing up. I love getting to connect with people and have met some amazing people who are now considered family. I make a point to move mountains to help our customers. I want to be the person who says they can, not sorry we don’t do that. I am not perfect, and understand I may not be the right florist for everyone, so I want to allow others in my industry to flourish as well. Please support whoever makes your vision come to life because I want people to be happy and not settle for convenience. I think we have been successful because we make things happen and don’t compromise our quality.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I honestly think my biggest pivot moment in my life has been leaving a 15 year career for entrepreneurship in Jules Flower Truck & Colonial. It was a huge pivot, but the best pivot I have ever made. I am getting to work in my own community and get to know my fellow small business owners while educating them on flowers, benefits and everything in between. Our flower truck business is an investment in our daughter, but my agency in Colonial is an investment into my community. Why wouldn’t we want to know more about ways to protect our brand we have worked so hard to build?
