We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabs Samame. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabs below.
Alright, Gabs thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My first introduction to the world of creativity was at my brother’s party with his group of friends from clown class. I was fifteen at this point, and I found myself engulfed in curiosity, staring through the window, seeing a diverse group of people having a great time being their vibrant selves. My brother asked me if I wanted to join them, so I entered their realm. After that, I joined clown school, discovered a different meaning of being one, and soon realized my passion for creativity.
Soon enough, I started appreciating the perfect blend of strategy and art in the Advertising world. I came to realize the power of brands as platforms to convey meaningful messages, each one telling a unique story. I am grateful to be a part of that very industry now, where I work as an art director, using brands as a platform to share captivating stories through visuals.
Gabs, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Of course! I am Gabs Samame, a Peruvian Art Director living in NY.
I pursued Communications at the University of Lima, right in my hometown. The idea of mastering every facet of communication before leaping into the world of Advertising appealed to me. While studying, an amazing opportunity came my way – I landed an internship at my first advertising agency. That experience opened doors for me, and soon enough, I found myself diving headfirst into the world of social media as a full-time Content Creator. Trust me, crafting daily content was a fantastic exercise in creativity, especially for a brand that demanded a lot.
Eventually, I got eager for my ideas to soar even higher. That’s when I took a game-changing leap by enrolling in the Art Direction program at the Miami Ad School NY. This move ignited my ambition to become the creative professional I’d always envisioned. The program was a whirlwind of innovative thinking, pushing boundaries, and embracing the unexpected, especially considering I graduated amidst the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
For me, the pandemic created a challenge. I transitioned from experiencing ad school in person to taking remote classes, carrying out a virtual internship, and rethinking my work style.
The first thing I noticed was how the only thing you saw in advertising was health-related. That’s when I looked at that industry from a different perspective. I saw an opportunity to create work that has a positive impact. That’s how I joined Neon, where I currently work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an art director allows me to connect with others on a deeply human level. There’s an incredible sense of fulfillment that comes from transforming a thing into something else that resonates with emotions, thoughts, and stories.
It is a constant reminder that creativity knows no bounds, and there is always room to explore new horizons. And that is the type of work I want to continue to do. Work that evokes emotions or sparks conversations, creating a bridge between hearts and minds, transcending barriers and differences. In essence, the ability to make an impact, forge connections, and continuously evolve as both an art director and an individual is what truly makes being creative a gratifying experience for me.
