We were lucky to catch up with Gabrielle Sundberg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabrielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on would be the first major television show I was a part of: Men of West Hollywood. The project was meaningful in a variety of ways: being my first major project, a first reality show, my first time producing and being a part of every aspect of production through post and delivery, and most importantly the show’s LGBTQIA+ theme and cast.
As a proud lesbian, working on a show about West Hollywood, with a largely LGBTQIA cast, about friendship, acceptance, and being proud of who you are – that solidified that project and my career to not only love what I do but love who I am.
It’s important to show LGBTQIA+ folks with allies both on and off the screen, as cast and as hard workers behind the scenes. This show helped set me up to my dream job. I’m a proudly out producer and filmmaker. Through my work, I’ve met so many amazing people and even set myself up to model and content create within the social media LGBTQIA+ world. This project is important to me because it helped set me on that path to who I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my filmmaking career early – I just knew from a young age that I wanted to get into filmmaking, and started working on shorts and working in the news broadcasts for my high school. I did a stint in college for filmmaking but felt it wasn’t for me and followed my dreams out to the city of film, and immediately got a job working camera for VIP productions shooting weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs. I worked, like most, on various productions and PA’s for companies like Hulu. Then I landed a job working for Get Me Out Productions, where I still work to this day, and worked on my first major production: Men of West Hollywood. That was the first time I was involved with every step of production from pre to post. I worked as an AC, a Producer’s Assistant, and eventually became the Associate Producer and an Editor on the project. Now I work as a producer at Get Me Out and am continuing working on more unscripted projects with them, as well as independent scripted projects on the side.
With my filmmaking career set on a good path, I’ve also branched out to working on myself, my social media content creation, and through that modeling. I became a content creator over covid and it took off in a big way on TikTok at first. I garnered over 90K followers and found a great community of people through that. Through this success I’ve been connected with brands that I now model for or do partnership deals with. I’ve worked with Humankind, Woxer and Blk Water. It’s been a wild ride and I’ve been thankful for every minute of it.
I strive to work and exemplify the what’s important to me. I never waiver from who I am, and I try everyday to put my best foot forward, to support myself, my family and my followers in who they want me to be. My identity is a big part of my brand and I try to be open, honest, and true for that.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being creative is the freedom I get to be myself as well as the support that comes from the types of people in the creative community. The creative space is so open and fun, and it allows me to experiment, to express and to craft a pathway entirely unique to me. I just makes my career exhilarating and more rewarding each and everyday.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my social media career right at the beginning of the Covid quarantine. It came from wanting to continue the trend of being creative and looking for outlets to do so when my industry was on pause. I started posting myself on TikTok doing whatever I wanted and just being myself. I would say I gained a following quickly by posting consistently and constantly. I also made sure to always stay true to me, to be happy and entertained with what I was doing, which also what people were watching for.
My advice for those just starting to build their social media presence is to just put in the work and be committed to it. Just keep posting, be consistent and always post what’s true for you. Be who you are because it’s not worth being anything else.
