We were lucky to catch up with Gabrielle Peete recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gabrielle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
In 2022, Plaster Works was given to me in a dream. From that vivid dream, I remembered two things, one of them being the word ‘plaster’ – meaning a material used for moulding. From there, I knew I could create a world of things that inspire me and mould them into something that is tangible. Having ideas by creating items that placed curiosity in her community’s hands and inspired individuals to explore it on their own. Combining my love for interiors and curation, I sought to create collections for a community of like-minded individuals who value items they feel are true reflections of themselves. Overall I want to spread culture through objects where you can hold them, pass them down and continue the conversation of how black culture has shaped us into the people we are today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Plaster Works is a collection of home goods created with the intent to make inspiration tangible. I wanted to create furniture that wasn’t your typical Bed and Beyond but something that when you saw it brings back a memory. A memory of a time you either heard or saw and inspired by a moment in culture. My own background and things I grew up on and was into is the main focus of the collections because it made me build taste and develop a sense of understanding stories. Im seek to create worlds that transcend our limitations with each collection by reimagining how our inspirations inform our ordinary experiences starting in our homes. I understand that inspiration is not something you own, but rather something that is given to you by the universe.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There are a lot of times where I thought I needed this person or that thing but realizing all I needed was me. There was a time where I got accepted to this market that is kind of a baby Complex Con. Complex Con is a event where artists and brands come together under one roof and network and connect. I wasn’t able to make it due to not finding a ride from family that I wanted to support. I wanted to give up but my friends I have around me reminded me who I was and I needed that in that moment. I forgot about the fire that even started my journey because it can catch some water sometimes if you have the wrong energy around. It was a reminder to me to stay with my flame on and allow it to light the bridge that Im on currently to my purpose in life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me is seeing people reactions and hearing their stories from a time where they were inspired. I love conversation and especially when its coming from people that connect with my art that I making.
