We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabrielle Kilgore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gabrielle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The risk I’ve taken recently is with my previous collection. It was a Wild West swim collection I had been working on for months. It was the most creative I’ve been honestly. It was different for me to put this collection together because I’ve never designed something with so much detail. I really challenged myself to do more with this project. I find it a risk (a small one) because it was out of my comfort zone. I mean when your working on a project, there’s always risk. Will my customers like it? Do you think they’ll see a decline in my work?
So for me being vulnerable in my designs, and putting my work out there I’ll always be risky. It’s just something you have to do when your really passionate about what you create..
Gabrielle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Gabrielle Kilgore. A fashion designer who’s passionate about the fashion industry. I’ve always loved fashion design and developed a deep love for it since I was a little girl. The business I created is a sustainable intimate and loungewear brand called K-L-G. I design intimate/loungewear for anyone that loves to be comfortable. I do also create swim between seasons.
What I would like for my customers to know about my brand is that I’m always looking for new ways to create sustainability and simplicity in my brand. All my collections have been made of recycled materials or fabrics. If I’m sourcing my product else where I always make sure that the company/ manufacture uses safe sustainable practices with their product.
When you put on clothing you’re also putting chemicals and other unhealthy fibers on your body. It’s important now more than ever that my customers remain heathy as well as comfortable in the clothing they choose to wear.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I source all my fabrics. It was tons of research. It’s what works for the body. How would this fabric feel to others? I did not know how to manufacture the product so I found a vendor that did. I normally choose small business owners to manufacture the fabric I need.
Along the way I’ve learned to take your time. Research the what and why’s of your fabric. Most importantly what and where your getting your product from. It’s just best to take your time and do the research.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a small business owner. You work hard to see results or sometimes to see none. Sometimes I do often wonder is this worth it? Should I just take a break and come back to it? I love what I can do with my work. I want others to know what I’m capable of too! So I’ll just keep sharpening my skills and creating.
