We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabriella Sterling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabriella below.
Hi Gabriella , thanks for joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
I have two heroes. One is my dad Henry Sterling. He has taught me everything I need to know financially, work ethic, business, and even a good portion of customer service. As a little girl, my dad used to own an HVAC (heating and air) company, and I used to tag along to service calls, meetings, etc.. that man was always working, even still is. He always told me, “No one is going to hand you what you want in life; you must go out and get it yourself.” His work ethic and drive inspired me and showed me how to work for what I want and to do it the right way.
My second Hero is my mentor Caitlin Walker. She has taught me color formulating, cutting techniques, and all things hair that you don’t learn in school. I always say I owe my entire career to her. If it weren’t for me getting hired to work for her at my first salon, I wouldn’t be as far as I am in this profession. I remember self-doubting a. Year Into this career and explaining to Caitlin I’d never be where she is. She always told me, “You will get there one day, don’t give up.” To this day, I always think about how far I have come from just her giving me the confidence I didn’t have.
Gabriella , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Gabriella, but everyone calls me Gabbie. I started out going to the JVS in Lorain County. I didn’t exactly know what I wanted to do after high school; I just knew I wanted to go to college and have a stable job. I picked cosmetology because I loved the creativity behind it. I knew it would be a solid job while I paid myself through college. I have had my cosmetology license since 2017. I attended LCCC for two semesters. While I was attending there, I had two jobs my first salon job and a hostess job. I fell in love with doing hair at this salon and met my excellent mentor. I owe most of my success in this profession to her. I got lucky finding someone willing to help me grow and learn. We have worked together ever since about five years now! Now I opened my own business sharing the suite space with her. We have been open for two years now. We are happier than ever.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for getting new clients in my chair believe it or not is Facebook. I share my work on local pages for free and or comment on post looking for new hairstylist. There is a lot of different ways to advertise free through social media.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Six years ago, I was looking anywhere and everywhere to work in a salon. I interviewed at probably 15 different salons. None of them was a good fit. I was very against chain salons. Finally, I caved and applied at the Avon Ohio Best Cuts. They were not hiring. In return, they sent my info to the North Olmsted Ohio Best Cuts, where Caitlin Walker was the manager. I went in for an interview and did two models to prove my abilities. She hired me of course and the rest is history. She’s helped me every step of the way through this career and has become a best friend of mine. Even today, I still have the voicemail she left me to schedule an interview at Best Cuts North Olmsted.
