We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabriella Jording a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabriella thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Currently I’m working on a very meaningful project based on love and loss and the stages of it. Through my recent relief prints I have been experimenting with expression and color and documenting my feelings through it. I’ve recently discovered Edvard Munch’s prints and the way he documents his journey of love, loss and loneliness. It’s very moving and honest and so that is what I am trying to achieve with my prints, to document my stages of honest love. It feels a lot more freeing making art this way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into art as a young girl when my mother would take me to art school every summer. This interest didn’t fully take effect until my sophomore year of high school. I began to express myself through my art and have fun with it. I met my dear friend Bjorn who helped me grow immensely in my art. We taught each other a lot and still do. I experiment with many different mediums: clay, printing, oil pastel, painting. I am always trying to learn a new skill to keep things interesting for myself.
Becoming an artist has been very strange because a lot of the time I am always thinking about what others may like about my work, trying to please them. However, recently I am breaking through that and just simply making art for myself and having fun with it.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, what makes creating art so rewarding is the feeling that you made something so beautiful and alive. I want my work to tell stories and to live within the paper or whatever medium it is. I feel most pleased with my work when it is packed with emotion, color and wonder. It is very inspiring, as well, when others feel that same thing from the work that I do.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have really struggles in the past with the idea of not everyone liking my work. I would make one piece that everybody loves and then the next week I would make something that really no one did. It became very hard on me and so I had to unlearn that idea of seeking perfection and admiration from everybody. Bjorn has really helped me with this because he just creates for God and not for anyone else. I am now just making art for myself and to glorify God as well. I feel much more satisfied with my work this way.
