We were lucky to catch up with Gabriela Rosales recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gabriela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve had a life long infatuation with fashion, but more specifically, personal style. Personal style allowed me to discover myself and always gives me a way to embody my evolution and step into who I’m becoming along the way while also honoring my roots. Similarly, astrology gives us insights into our multi-faceted being and I’ve always had a natural curiosity for mysticism but took my decade long curiosity about astrology and got more serious about it during the pandemic. Prior to that and becoming a stylist, I had a clothing label called Moon Arrow where I designed and hand made one of a kind pieces. It was through Moon Arrow that I started making garments inspired by the zodiac which took on a life of its own as I discovered the undeniable link between the cosmos and our sense of Self which can be supported by embodiment via personal style. I began a journey of heavy research which catalyzed my own development of what I call Intuitive Styling. Understanding clothing from the design and construction lens gave me a unique insight into fit and proportions while my studies in mysticism gave me the understanding of how powerful and transformative style can be. The intersection of both of these avenues solidified my philosophy that while you can transform yourself internally through spirituality, that transformation can be enhanced and accelerated by transforming the outside as well.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The world we live in conditions us to believe that there are “beauty standards” and I reject this notion with every fiber of my being. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder but that beholder is you. Beauty is more than aesthetics; it is a frequency that we can live in alignment with and it is undefinable. Beauty is expansive, not limiting and my purpose is really to help people heal their relationships to their own unique beauty. Every form of beauty is valid and deserves to be seen and I think it is abhorrent that we have been led to believe that beauty is so limited and can be defined by standards that are rooted in racism, sizeism, ageism, the patriarchy and capitalism. We are all beautiful and I am passionate about teaching people to understand the language of their beauty and how to wield it so that it is fun! Because self expression is supposed to be fun and isn’t supposed to be a source of anxiety, self consciousness and self deprecation. To me, all of the unique beauty that exists in the world contributes to the dynamic tapestry of human expression and nothing is more sacred than that diversity.
Personal style can be a form of self discovery and my goal is to help people discover the totality of who they are through learning how to embody their multitudes rather than distilling them and personal style is a an accessible and tangible way of doing so.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
it is incredibly rewarding to be a part of someones embodiment journey. To be a part of their story and activate a sense of sovereignty in who they are and how they choose to express that outside of the confines of societies expectations is a beautiful thing to witness. The more empowered we are, the more dynamic and beautiful this world becomes and teaching people how to find joy in the things that used to give them anxiety is the greatest kind of alchemical work. I feel so lucky and so grateful to be even a small part of someones journey in this way.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to remind the collective that all beauty is valuable and deserves to be appreciated. It is to remind the world that it is okay to want to be beautiful, but that that doesn’t have to mean that your beauty has to fall within a certain box or category. Your style and tastes are sacred and they exist within you because you are mean to express it. And that by doing so, you give permission to others to do the same. The greatest gift we have to give ourselves and the world is simply to be as uniquely you as possible. And have fun along the way!
