We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabriela Rojas Veizaga a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabriela, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Do I take vacations, the obvious answer is yes! Throughout my adolescence, I took my vacations very seriously since they helped me feel rejuvenated and inspired. You may ask, why does it inspire you? As a result, I gain a deeper understanding of the world as well as connect with a wide variety of cultures and lifestyles I encounter. It also helps me improve my mental health, motivation, relationships, and work ethic. The different settings will also help you discover and consider fresh ideas you hadn’t thought of before which really help influence my work as a designer since everything is evolving.
Gabriela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello to whoever is reading this, let me tell you more about myself!
In my pursuit of new creative endeavors, I was excited to find the experience design opportunity. As a progressive professional with graphic design experience, I believe that I can bring valuable contributions to your team. I am a George Mason Alumni that has graduated with a BFA in Art and Visual Technology, concentration in Graphic Design. I would bring a demonstrated commitment to an effective brand and visual design with my programming. Identifying innovative approaches and improved solutions to business challenges both motivate and drive me. Observation, inspiration, and determination are my foundations for success. My brand and visual courses, combined with my creative director position have prepared me to combine my skills as a graphic designer with my interest in branding. I have a strong passion for the design industry and its innovations throughout time.
What makes me stand out: While there are plenty of other potential candidates who may share a similar academic background in design, I have a very strong ambitious spirit and strive to continuously innovate my design. I believe that building trusting, humble relationships is the key to building a connection with people. I also served as the design manager at the SOA Gallery during my last semester at GMU, which helped me gain management experience. In both my personal and professional life, I am very adaptable and love to learn new things every day.
What makes me most proud: I am proud of how far I’ve come in my personal and work life. No matter the challenges I faced, I managed to overcome them with my ambitious and optimistic spirit. As a Latina that is under the DACA act, I never gave up on my dreams which are heavily based on the way I’d love to live my life and help support my family. I am proud of all the work I made, even my first projects as a designer because they were made with passion and my knowledge at the time.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have a few goals in my professional career that I’d love to complete one at a time. I would love to start work for an entertainment brand down the road to become familiar with the entertainment industry, it would help me network around and find a new way of design thinking. Following that, I would also love to become a creative director once I gain the right amount of experience in my field. I would love to work for some artists that I am a huge fan of and create work for them!
What drives me the most is learning every day, design is pure innovation and it’s always changing. It’s a beautiful craft that can elaborate so much and inspire people.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I would say criticism, in my thoughts I always thought of it very negatively. But it was something that I had to unlearn and change the way I thought about it. My fear of receiving criticism was rooted in my belief that whatever I made was terrible. As time went by I learned that criticism is a great thing, and it benefited me as a designer. Criticism is essential to help you grow as an individual and helps you see things from a different perspective.
