Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gabriel Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Gabriel , thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’m hoping people who know my journey of shifting careers and following my passion head first are inspired to do the same. Go against the grain and establish a way that works for them and their dreams even when nothing is being presented as a reality. After seeing the path I took to teach myself both creative and business practices that have catapulted my business to new heights is respected and studied. I want to leave my mark as someone who colored outside the lines and taught others to live life as an abstract masterpiece. People should no longer minimize their dreams for the temporary reality of their environment, resources, support and the lack there of.

Gabriel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Art and fashion has played a leading role in my life since childhood, beyond career goals, it’s been a source of expression and sanity for me. Which is the core behind Truly Rare Customs, a streetwear brand that specializes in artistic, sustainable and exclusive clothes and custom shoes. Years before the launch I would design worn down basics to not necessarily stand out but stand in my own lane in just junior high. Fast forward to 2020, mid quarantine lockdown, I put down the camera from college and picked up a paint brush to revisit my fashion roots. One design that was intended to cure my boredom ended up becoming the gateway to a brand that celebrates bespoke hand painted, sewn or heat pressed garments. Unlike other brands, Truly Rare Customs handcrafts inclusive yet exclusive collections for all genders, sizes, personalities and walks of life; offering sustainable off the rack, one of one and wholesale bulks. Over the course of 3 official years in business’s, I can say each service added to the market has been a self taught skill, that’s represents a level of loyalty, adaptability and opened doors for me to stand as the first Eric Out law Incubator cohort. An amazing 14 + month retail space met with knowledgeable mentors, resources and a growing community that inevitably catapults Truly Rare Customs from an e-commerce and occasional pop-up shop to a daily retail experience.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
From childhood crafting, college side hustle to full time career, my business has been being molded longer than its origin date. It wasn’t until last year however that I quit my dead end job and committed everyday to building my business marketing’, customer, and retail experience. Just months after releasing my first collection I was chosen as one of the first women entrepreneurs to partake in a incubator initiative, For a little over a year I’ll have full access to a newly renovated storefront in an amazing upcoming location, stellar connections, and limitless opportunities to host events, offer new customization services, and test new marketing strategies.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
To many, my journey seems planned and well executed, when in reality it was motivated by passion, fairytale dreams and risky decisions. Which turns out to be the secret recipe to success. Building a business from scratch is like witnessing the birth of a butterfly, it has several foundational stages that takes time, trust, and dedication to reap the fruits of your outcome. I’m learning in this journey that without an unsettling attachment to your dreams eventually plans and preparation falls flat. And when that happens sometimes the only thing that’ll help you bounce back will be your desire to make your dreams a reality.
