Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gabriel Verdugo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Gabriel, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey in photography began when I had asked to borrow my friends mirrorless camera during a stroll in Balboa Park. He showed me the basics and motivated me to buy my first DSLR. After that, I consumed as much information as I could through various resources, like YouTube and Instagram. Truthfully, I feel like there’s nothing I could’ve done to speed up the process. With the way I personally learn, I benefit most from visual learning and working at my own pace. The skills that I consider to be the most essential when it comes to photography and videography would definitely be adaptability and humility. Those two qualities gave me various opportunities that would not have been available otherwise. Always be willing to learn! At times, your main obstacle can be your own ego and self-esteem. That is what I’ve had to overcome.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Gabriel Verdugo and I was born in San Diego, California. I enjoy exploring the local National Parks and travelling across the globe. My photography began as a way of documenting my own story. Now, it’s evolved to capturing the stories of others through short-form videos and unique photos. Whether it be music, concerts, anniversaries, weddings, branding, and portraits, I capture whatever the client needs with confidence. I want potential clients to know that I’m easy to work with and am willing to make your creative vision come to life. My editing style and adaptability sets me apart from others.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The foundation of my reputation was built upon being on time and an excellent listener. Clients take note of who is a hardworking individual and if you listen more than you speak. By developing a good work ethic, people are a lot more willing to work with me, even if it’s a sacrifice. Never underestimate the power of displaying the quality of humility. It’ll get you farther in life and result in satisfying, fulfilling work.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My old co-worker, Gabe, had taken a leap of faith in hiring me to photograph his concert, despite my lack of experience in such a demanding environment. As the first notes reverberated through the venue, I felt a surge of adrenaline mixed with a twinge of doubt. But as I began to frame my shots, adjusting settings on the fly and experimenting with different angles, I discovered a newfound sense of confidence. With each click of the shutter, I embraced the challenge, determined to capture the essence of the performance. Through perseverance and a willingness to adapt, I transformed uncertainty into opportunity, seizing the moment to showcase my talent and passion for photography. This goes to show that, despite my shy nature, resilience can overcome any obstacle.
