We recently connected with Gabriel Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Gabriel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Taking a risk is something I’ve done my entire life! My life as a child was nothing short of the urban tale of an inner city youth so taking risks to survive was normal. It wasn’t until I became an adult that I learned the true definition of taking a risk. The biggest risk I took was relocating from the East Coast to the West Coast in 2017 in search of a better life for myself and my children.
My children stayed behind while I tried to find myself in this new foreign land. Needless to say. There were plenty moments of regret. I ended up homeless and as heartbreaking as that may seem. This was the beginning of many blessings to come.
Although my circumstances weren’t the best. I decided I could still help those in need. With only a iPhone in my possession. I started writing the story of my life in the memo section of my iPhone. You read correct! The stories quickly spawned into what the world would know as The Definition. A self help book based on events of my life.
I built a website using the same iPhone to promote my book and myself as a speaker. Not soon after. I felt failure and went back home with my tail tucked between my legs. A month and a half later; I returned to the West Coast on a mission to win!
I slept in a rental car for a few days before renting a room in one of the many motels that adorned the streets of West Hollywood. At my lowest point. I received a email from a producer at GoDaddy! I called and the rest is history!
I was offered a partnership that would not only change my life but the lives of my children. I’ve since been in several commercials. A documentary and made history October 12, 2019 as a speaker. This would be the very same event that sealed the deal between myself and now my soulmate and wife Tymera.
Needless to say. Had I not taken the risk to come back to the West Coast determined to make it. I wouldn’t be able to write this testimonial.
Take The Risk!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Gabriel Smith and I’m a writer, speaker, entrepreneur and designer. I am the author of the self help book “The Definition” which garnered me a lot of opportunities that boosted me as an individual and a brand.
My book came about because I’m a true survivor! Surviving some of the worst that life had to give me and living to write and tell about it. This not only led to media coverage and publicity. It also led to my journey as a Life Coach among the other titles I hold.
I’ve been told that I am one of wisdom and charisma. My trials and survival techniques are the tools needed for my clients to become the best version of themselves. We all have the ability to grow but sometimes we just need a bit of help and that’s where I come in.
I’m most proud of being a husband and a father to 5 beautiful children. Zyanne, Lauren, Gabriel Jr, Kennedy and Morgan Smith. All of whom have been motivation for me to push through and succeed.
I’m also extremely proud to be the husband of Tymera. Owner of House of Mera which is a clothing company based in Los Angeles, California and also a fellow writer and speaker but more importantly my biggest cheerleader to say the least.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One book that has really helped to transform me as an individual is the book written by my wife Tymera Finley and it’s entitled “My 30 Day Gratitude Journal”. It’s a journal filled with quotes, challenge and eye opening advice on how to show gratitude for the blessings you currently possess despite your current circumstances.
That’s very important especially with being a creative or entrepreneur because there will definitely be times when you question the path you chose.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What’s driving my creative journey are my wife and children. I know they deserve the world and to give that to them. I have to succeed because a job is not going to give them what I feel they deserve.
