We were lucky to catch up with Gabriel Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabriel, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Originally I had bought a an analog camera for my partner and she had shown me the basics of using a film camera, ie loading and removing film . Just the very basics. Photography was never her main interest, so I decided to pick up the camera and actually try and use it. During Covid I would walk around my suburb and take as many photos as possible. I would go out and take photos on different settings even if I knew they were going to come out bad. I did this just to get a feel how each setting affected the photos and how they interacted with one another. As for speeding up the learning process, I just kept practicing, I know that’s the least interesting answer but that’s what you have to do. Keep taking photos! I think the most essential skill or trait was/is visualizing what emotion or feeling want to convey, and how the viewer will translate that emotion or feeling. I think one obstacle that impeded my progress was the lack of experience on my part, but I’m still learning and will forever be learning.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Honestly, I kind of got in photography as just a hobby, something to do whilst bored or whenever I found myself wanting to express my creativity. None of this was intentional but it was a happy little accident. As for what I’m most proud of, I’d say my growth as a creative. Going back and looking at past projects and current ones, I definitely see a marked difference in what I’ve learned and how it’s affected my art. I still have a long way but right now, I’m happy with what I have and can accomplish.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative, is the emotion or experience people get from viewing my work.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Personally, I believe people should obviously attend more art galleries and venues, but also volunteer for work at art venues. Another form of support would be to encourage universities and councils the like to invest more into arts programs and events and nurture any creative talent at a young age. Taking a vested interest in music, film or art of any kind and spreading that connection with art is paramount.
