Gabriel, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started doing art when I was seven years old. At that age I did not know that it was art. In my life started full of challenges, Being in and out of foster homes did not have a consistency of learning things the normal way. At age 9 I went back to foster care for four years. One of the ways that I was able to survive was having the ability to do art. Soon after we got to the foster home we noticed that the kids had so many toys they had a hard time sharing, But when I had the chance I would copy some of the hot wheel cars back front top and bottom by drawing them and then having something of my own. Fast forward I went to fashion industry is high school SUNY purchase and then Columbia University. School was very challenging one because of my upbringing family background am I disability with dyslexia, yet I encourage and challenge everyone to make the most of school and everything that has to offer. Growing up starting in junior high school I had the opportunity to go to summer arts program it gave me the chance to escape and understand the art that I Given/have.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The story that I would like to share of my journey is one of survival inspiration creativity and family. Surviving growing up in foster homes and in group homes not knowing who aware home would be and for how long. Not sure why this had to be my journey but in many ways I am thankful it made me resourceful and appreciative of the smallest thing. Not sure why I also was made as an artist but I’m sure they both are intertwines in creating the person that I am today. I threw my different levels of school I have received different opportunities of receiving awards be part of summer programs in the arts traveling to different parts of the world, And having the opportunity to teach several different thousands of students. Through my arts I’ve been able to transform disasters lost a family hardships through arts and creating a piece of artwork that can be displayed and help to understand that you can start with despair and end up in a gallery inspiring and educating many.
I want to conclude with a slogan did I created.
When life roads lead you to a wall create a gallery.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being a productive member of society in the arts. Having the opportunity to create language in my art making is extremely empowering for someone who had a difficult time in school because of dyslexia. I’ve been able to be part of fellowships residencies travel to different parts of the world I am become an art teacher that not just teachers but inspires the students not just because of the lesson but how I live my life as an artist. Recently my daughter graduated undergrad and she combined Mine and moms majors and graduated a museum studies. As a woodworker illustrator mix media artist I am proud that I can inspire and Encourage creativity.
Thank you for who I am and what I can.
