We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabriel Gipson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabriel below.
Hi Gabriel, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Yes. A defining moment for me in my career would be right now in present day! I have recently secured the position at my kid’s school, Libertas School of Memphis, as their Health Advocate! This is exciting for me because I get to connect more with my kid’s school and extend my advocacy work. Before this position I was only able to connect with a limited amount of families, providing doula support and advocacy, well now that I am working with a beautiful community like Libertas I am able expand my connections. This is also allowing me to shine and glow in other areas when it comes to health advocacy and support. A lesson I got from this was to just GO FOR IT. You know when something is meant for you and you should never let it pass you by.

Gabriel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Community Doula and Health Advocate, owner of Pleasantly Plump, LLC! I started off my journey as a doula advocating for women and children in the hospitals and out of the hospitals. I show support for families during pregnancy and postpartum. I educate families about their rights when it comes to giving birth and I provide guidance to resources where extra help may be needed. I am currently providing services in the Memphis, TN area as well as some areas in Mississippi. I’ve been actively and consistently doing this work for over 4 years now. During this experience I would say I am the most proud of my growth. Being able to expand myself and services feels really good because I know I am going after what I want no matter how tough it may be.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Consistency and self grace. Consistency because the more we do something the better we become better at it. Grace because everyday will not be smooth and may seem as if you are not doing enough but you are so give yourself grace.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The grace that I give and the patience that I have is what helps build my reputation. I know for a fact that the people I work with are grateful for my services and the experiences they have with me because of my patient, warm, yet firm approach. Just because I give grace doesn’t mean I do not have boundaries and that is where I gain the most respect when it comes to my services.
