We recently connected with Gabriel Connor and have shared our conversation below.
Gabriel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve been involved with so far is Red Devil Vortex’ latest album. Red Devil Vortex is my band, I am the lead singer and bass player. This is our fourth release, but our first full length album. The band’s line up has never sounded better than now, we created a musical piece of work that we’re all proud of and we’re lucky we get to tour the United States in 2023 and now in 2024 promoting the album.
Gabriel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Gabriel Connor. I am a musician, I am originally from Curitiba, Brazil and I found my way to Los Angeles, CA in 2015, where I started my band Red Devil Vortex. I am the lead singer and bass player in Red Devil Vortex. I am one of the main songwriters and I also create a lot of the artwork and music videos for the band. We have just released our self-titled full length album and we’re getting ready to tour the United States in April and May with Otep and Doyle (Original guitar player of The Misfits).
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This is a long story but I’ll try to keep it short: One time I was on tour and we were near Chicago, IL. The cops stopped us because for some reason our vehicle’s license plate was suspended. Our vehicle was from Georgia and we couldn’t drive it with a suspended license. Our next show was in two days in a city nearby, so I took a Greyhound bus on an 18 hour trip back to Georgia with 15 bucks in my pocket (That was all the tour money we had that day), slep for four hours at a friends couch, he took me to the dmv first thing in the morning (Thanks John!) and we had all the paperwork straight except the DMV didn’t take the only credit card I had. I still had a card from Brazil that hadn’t been working with any ATM on that tour, so for a brief moment I though the tour was going to be over right there, but I decided to try my Brazilian card at their ATM either way and it WORKED! And it worked TWICE! So I got the new plate, we got out of there, I hopped on another Greyhoundbus for another 18h back to the tour, making it just in time for the next show.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I love the music I play, I love the band we are and I love creating the art I create. I feel very fortunate I get to do that.
