We recently connected with Gabriel Barrio and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabriel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I started getting into business very slow. At first helping friends who needed assistance with their work/business/music. I was uneasy about starting and not having the wealth of experience I would have wanted. The main steps it took for me to launch were to first gather a business plan, structure out my offerings/services, then do market research and launch by contacting potential clients. It started as me working in the music world as an artist/producer and realizing the need for small business and music marketing/advertising. After the initial phase of learning about the need, I started working with a record label writing interviews and album reviews, then working with a record store doing the same content. Then after a few years of doing this I had met plenty of artists and realized the business world needed some solid marketing and advertising representation instead of the very shady practitioners out at the time. I realized that I has to finally jump in head first and learn to swim so to speak and took on my first few clients in 2016. I developed my processes and reduced my services to high return options and really began in earnest to feel like I was established at this point. It took a lot of work to be ready but even more important I realized the best time to act is now and start even if you have to learn along the way.

Gabriel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the music industry by first being a big music fan and working as an artist/producer first. After some time I decided to learn the business end of the music world to drive success for myself and a colleague. After learning from record labels, artists and marketing professionals that the music business had a need in my area I decided to open up shop.
I have worked as a music journalist for a record label, record store, a now defunct website that covered my states Hip Hop community, a battle rap league owner, and now my marketing agency.
I am most proud of my constant engagement with the music community and how often I get to work with talented individuals/businesses/brands.
I provide press placement to artists, promotion for their music/videos, social media marketing, and advertising.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think the first time I had to learn about pivoting was after my first year. Things were slow and I didn’t realize how often businesses fail due to failure to adapt. I learned this through difficulties and found that if I changed my available services to only high return my demand was higher. This was an expensive but important lesson.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the biggest illustration of resilience in my experience and professional life is working on my projects even when it wasn’t clear it would payoff. This can be a foolish exercise but to me this experience taught me to value dedication and the ability to think through my opportunities and grow from them!
