We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gabriel Amor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gabriel below.
Gabriel, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Coming from a family of artists, I was aware early on about the pros and cons of following an artist career. I remember at 17 thinking about the possible challenging upcoming times, and tell myself as a promise that I must not be discouraged .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a french born musician, I grew up in Paris and moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1997. I started playing music at a young age starting with classical violin , then being a teenager I moved on to playing guitar in various bands. I also studied jazz in a very experimental school in Paris lead by american musician Alan Silva. In the early 90’s I worked with a music and theater group called Generation Chaos exploring the interactions between theater, dance and music. I formed the “avant pop” duo Amor Belhom Duo in Tucson Arizona and started to record albums with musicians like Calexico. Soon , I started composing music for films, documentaries, shorts.. My displacement from Paris to Tucson gave me a singular perception on the United States and the Southwest in particular. In no way I would try to imitate the music of this country , but rather let it with time infiltrate my ways of composing and playing. It also put light on my own culture , a distance and the realization of all the clichés about the French culture.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One rewarding aspect of being an artist is for me to create my own sense of purpose. The blank page is always frightening , but you learn patience, you sharpen your sensitivity to what is coming. You gain confidence in a process that day by day, year after year you create yourself. It is a feeling of freedom in which what you are creating shows you what you were searching for.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My resilience consists on integrating adaptation in the creative process. My question always is “What is my desire, what can I do given the circumstances?” My resilience is to always stay true to what I feel, use my imagination to make the decisions the will lead me to the next adventure. Also having different musical projects that evolve on different scenes or genre is very dynamic in terms of learning, inspiration. The different projects provide movement which stimulates creativity.
