We recently connected with Gabe Lustman and have shared our conversation below.
Gabe, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
First time I knew I wanted to pursue music professionally as a career hmmm… I always loved singing but it wasn’t until the 9th grade talent show at my junior high that it really dawned on me that this was something I could seriously do. The way the crowd reacted when I sang “I want it that way” by Backstreet Boys! I had 6 times to perform that day as they rotated the crowd out through their science classes each hour and by the 3rd hour / lunchtime word had got around the school and there were signs people had made in the crowd saying I love Gabe and I want it that way! It was epic!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started doing music professionally in may 2006 that’s the first time I got into a recording studio and cut my first original song. I was introduced to the studio by a Kenyan producer by the name of Dickson “RD” Oyaro. By June we had landed a spot on the Chris Brown run it tour with cherish and that was my first taste of really doing it on that level. I remember we performed at the Minneapolis convention center which held about 10k people. The girl before me got booed off stage and I happened to go directly after her! The preparation for months with 10 dancers and show I had lined up didn’t fail me and the crowd erupted and showed mad love so much so that the concert promoter gave me an autograph table next to Breezy after the show and got spill over from his fans by the thousands I was sitting autographs and taking pics all night it’s seemed like and that’s when I knew this life was for me!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think we need to start in the schools. I know there are programs like VH1 save the music which I am a member and advocate for have been for years but there has been long talks about removing music from schools which is crazy… we need to reach the youth and give our youth a good channel to channel their positivity and their creative side!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I really enjoy getting messages from people who listen to my music on how my music has helped them through hard times in their life or inspired them to follow their dreams I think that is what it’s all about. The way people smile and bring joy to them at the shows. After all I’m just vessel to serve a higher purpose with the gift I was given.
