We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabe Lopez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew when I was five years old. There was just something about the way that music felt to me. It just felt completely like the right path. Looking at it now, music is how I understand the world. It’s how I process emotions, connect to people, and find my utmost truth.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a music producer and singer-songwriter. I produce music for RuPaul’s Drag Race, Belinda Carlisle, New Kids on the Block, Dora the Explorer (I cowrote the new theme song), KPOP artists, and other TV shows. I have my own solo music, as well. I love being able to work with so many different creative minds in various genres! I’ve been immersed in music since I was little, and each show/song/project has been a step moving to where I am. And I love helping artists, groups, show and teams find the songs, scores and sounds for their musical needs. It’s like I get to connect with other creatives in an audio sandbox.
I think I’m most proud of just keeping the music coming from a truthful place, a pure place. I still love music so much and I am such a music geek. Music excites me every day. I find that inspires people to create their best work.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
It’s funny – actually Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” It’s simple but true. I find that the book becomes more relevant with each passing year. I read it a handful of times every year.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think it’s important for people to understand that art helps people to think, grow, imagine, relate, look inward – all things that make for a better world. It’s important to save programming and funding for music and art in our schools. Immersing the minds of our youth in music and art really does make for a better tomorrow.
