We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabby Scheuler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gabby, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe it takes a team to be successful! (Which might sound crazy because it’s really just me treating kids right now). BUT I mean a team of mentors, supporters, and friends. I truly believe in networking and connecting with others that share in a similar vision. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my family, friends, college mentors, and clients.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Therapeutic Playhouse was created based on the needs I discovered and heard from parents in my first years practicing in pediatrics. I have always been passionate about creating opportunities for kids to help them reach their full potential.
My story starts in high school when I taught private swim lessons and had a variety of clients with special needs. Through this I discovered occupational therapy and graduated from the University of Missouri. During graduate school I worked alongside peers and professors to creat SWIM (Swimming and Water instruction Modifications for Children with ASD). The program still exists today and I couldn’t be more proud of all the families we have served.
After moving to KC, and working in a private outpatient practice I continued to listen and discover more needs. An adapted preschool was needed for kids that were struggling to be successful in a typical classroom setting. This is the one of the Playhouse’s first groups. Our Language & Motor Preschool is run 4 times a year (Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall). Each session is 8 weeks long. Every class is different and tailored to the needs of the students. Therapeutic Playhouse also offers peer groups for kids struggling with anxiety and social skills. We have seen so much progress from these groups and it is the highlight of the kids month! Miss Gabby does provide in home private and virtual therapy. She also teaches Regulation Station one time a month at MyPlay Cafe in Lees Summit.
All of her programs have come from listening and collaborating with parents about how she can best serve. I truly feel like I am living my dream and serving so many amazing kids along the way!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Collaborating with similar professions and through pst clients. I truly care about each one of my families and majority of my referrals are from word of mouth at this time.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I believe every business has growing pains that require you to step back and re-evaluate things. My family is my number one priority. At times, I have had to step back and look at my WHY? This requires me to pivot and create new ideas. Every parents goal is to be home when your kids are, but in my field sometimes it requires me to work later. I am at a pivot point right now… do I jump and hire someone to help with the evening clients or do I shift my focus? It’s hard and scary things, but believe in looking at one thing at a time and that growing slowly is sometimes better.
