We were lucky to catch up with Gabby Jockers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I actually just graduated (March 2022) from a very meaningful photography course, which involved a lot of photography projects to deepen my skills. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences that has helped me connect the dots between the transformational experience I want to offer clients and actually being able to consistently offer it.
Looking through my portfolio last year, I noticed something in my best work that was missing from the rest. That something was emotion. Emotion was the spark that brought the photographs to life. It was what made people fall in love with an image. It was what made a photo more than just a picture of a face or body, but of a person.
I then had the opportunity to take 3 month course on learning to identify, embody, and coach for emotion in my work, which included many practice photoshoots and other projects. Not only did this whole project help me make progress on some personal goals, but it helped me hone my photography skills so I can now consistently create a deeper connection with every client and create a safe space with zero judgement or shame.
I help those in front of my camera feel and express themselves on a deep level, connecting to their own beautiful humanity. And I reflect it back to them so they can see how incredible they appear to those who love them. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do as a photographer, and I finally have the skills to do it consistently.
Gabby, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At Embodied Art Boudoir, you get a lot more than just a ‘sexy photoshoot.’ You’ll have a luxurious & confidence-boosting experience, designed for women & femmes on their self love journey.
I help my clients connect to their bodies and express their hearts, so they can quiet their inner critic, heal their body image, and feel more confidence & joy in their lives!
Plus it’s a ton of fun! It’s a full day of YOU – you’ll get your hair & makeup professionally done, do a pre-shoot body love meditation, and turn into a total rockstar during your photoshoot!
And don’t worry – everyone comes in a little unsure and everyone ends up totally rocking it out! I coach you through every little thing, from posing to body language, so you can get out of your head and into your body.
And when you’re holding your album in your hands or gazing on your after, you’ll see that you are art. You Are a Masterpiece.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I started my business, I was actually photographing couples and elopements. It seemed exciting and fun, but a year in I hadn’t gotten anywhere despite all my pushing. Deep down, I knew it was not compatible with the life I wanted. I hate commuting and working weekends and outdoor elopements consist of a lot of driving, sunrises, and weekend work.
But the advice I’d heard was to niche down and stay focused on my one thing. So I followed the advice and blocked myself off from experimenting and finding what did work for me!
I finally realized this when I finally took the advice from a friend (“you should photograph boudoir”) and I fell in love. And people loved working with me too! For the first time in a year I had clients!
That experience was a wake-up call for me. I had stopped exploring before I found my thing! So I pivoted my whole business toward boudoir, but I’m not holding myself back from exploring other things. I have been photographing some headshots, model work, and different creative projects. My work has the excitement of creativity again because of my pivot!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My two core values – freedom & growth – drive my journey. It took me a while to identify these values, but thinking of my creative journey definitely helped me find them. When I reflected on my journey, these two emerged as driving forces. How can I help myself & my community find freedom & growth? That’s my goal post.
