Gabby, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I had a hard time turning my creative work into cash. I have been working on my content since January of 2022. Now I am finally in a spot where I am comfortable and making a good living off of doing campaigns and partnering with brands. Consistency is KEY! Especially when it comes to social media. You can post 1000 things in a month but it only takes one really great post to go viral and make a difference in your earnings and reach.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Yeah! So I had always wanted to be a content creator/blogger. The goal was to make it my full time job. I feel like I’m one of the lucky ones, In quarantine when TikTok was still up-and-coming I started posting videos immediately. I saw the platform as an opportunity to grow my instagram page/audience. Like i said before, it only takes one post to go viral to make a huge difference and thats exactly what happened, I shared funny videos on TikTok and fashion on Instagram. I made a TikTok impersonating Kourtney Kardashian that went viral overnight. I woke up one day with 10000+ followers on instagram and TikTok. I instantly knew I had to take the opportunity and start creating content to keep up with my community. Ever since then I’ve found a way to connect the two and continue to grow my community on both platforms. I post pretty and aesthetically pleasing content on instagram and funny/comedic content on TikTok and I want to show my followers that you don’t have to have a specific niche to be successful or to make money, I’m a real person who laughs and has fun, not a person who takes herself seriously 24/7 like my instagram would show.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding part of being a creator is the sense of community. I’ve met some amazing people and two of my best friends who I wouldn’t have met otherwise if it weren’t for instagram. I had been “instagram friends” with these girls who lived in Chicago for two years. We had never met in person before but they moved to Austin recently and we have been inseparable ever since! Not to mention you get invited to events and get to network with some of fashion and beauty’s biggest names and people!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think as a creative it can be difficult to have normal relationships/friendships with non-creatives. We are constantly “on” and my brain doesn’t stop working just because I’m out at dinner or on vacation “relaxing.” What may seem like a relaxing vacation to some is a content creating spree for an influencer. I have so many ideas especially when visiting a new place. Because a lot of creatives make money shooting/filming, taking a photo can really make a difference in our earnings that week/month. I would ask my non-creative friends and family to show grace and have patience as the lines between work and play can become blurred for us. Blogging and social media on this scale hasn’t been around very long so we are learning as we go.
