We recently connected with Gabby Fletcher and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gabby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
As a youth I was consistently carrying a camera with me. I would take photos at every family function, stop on the side of the road to snap a few pictures, and take my friend’s senior photos. I only stopped because as I got older, life got in the way. After getting married, graduating from college, and two babies- I needed that creative outlet in my life again. My fingers yearned for something to do that would push my limits, encourage me to meet new people, and allow me to pick up my camera again! My husband encouraged me to start my own photography business- not because we needed the money but because I needed the creative outlet.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Gabby Fletcher Photo LLC. I am the owner and photographer of a small business that photographs families and couples, seniors, weddings, events, and more! Some people ask why I named my business my own name but I did it because there is nobody like me. I have 10+ years of experience in the field and am a photographer because I love it, not because I need the money.
My dad was a hobby photographer, he carried a camera everywhere. Sometimes we would be driving down the road and he would slam on the breaks. I didn’t even need to ask why, I just knew he found the perfect shot and he needed to capture it right then and there. This was how we bonded. We would drive around the Pacific Northwest (where I grew up) and photograph landscapes. We would do each other’s portraits, and we would try to make them creative and interesting.
In high school I started taking photography classes and learned film and DSLRs. We had the most amazing dark room and I would spend hours in there before and after school just learning all I could. My senior year I started working part-time for a photography studio that photographed high school dances and I loved it.
Then life got busy, I started traveling, got married, had kids, graduated from college- all things that kept me from photography. Last year, my husband encouraged me to get back into it because he found a box of my old photos and he was so impressed by my work, he couldn’t believe that I had given it up.
I started doing engagement sessions, working as a second shooter for weddings, and doing senior and family portraits immediately. Before I knew it, my business was taking off!
My photography style is true to color and timeless. I prioritize helping you feel beautiful and empowered in your photos. I want to be the photographer you come back to time after time because you not only love my style but you love working with me.
I am most proud of my ability to get children and grumpy husbands to smile- which is no small feat, trust me!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am deeply religious and God the Father is a master creator. He not only designed and created the heavens and the earth, but He created us in our entirety. If I want to be like my Father in Heaven, I need to also create! He did such a breathtaking job at creating the hills and valleys, streams and rivers, mothers and fathers, children and animals, that I have this yearning to capture those creations with my camera and share them with the world the way that I see them- magnificent.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
In my profession I meet all kinds of people. I get to know them and their families, their goals and dreams, their insecurities and fears. Especially for weddings and families, I get to photograph genuine love and raw moments that come once in a lifetime. I get to be apart of your family for a day, laughing, crying, and enjoying each month with you. That is what is most rewarding- experiencing tender and loving moments with you and your families.
