We were lucky to catch up with Gabby Abebe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gabby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I love candles. I have one lit at all times. After years of purchasing candles and following my favorite brands, I decided it was time to make my own. 2020 gave me the perfect chance to do just that.
After making a few of my favorite scents, I started bridging candle making with my spiritual practice. Each candle contains oils, herbs, flowers, and crystals that correspond with a specific manifestation.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I create manifestation products with a primary focus on candles. The materials I use in all of my products align with a very specific manifestation.
My products are great for use in meditation, spiritual rituals, and every day life.
I’m proud of the community of small business owners I’ve built in the Bay Area and online. Sharing, learning, and supporting each other motivates me.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I use Etsy for retail online selling. It’s easy to manage orders and my online shop.
Fees are inconvenient, but I don’t have the capacity to build and maintain my own site so I’ll be staying for now.
I have to consistently market on Instagram to drive sales. I rarely get organic sales from Etsy. I don’t mind because I’m able to control volume which helps me stay balanced since I work full time.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s easy to compare your business to others you see online and critique your own.
While others may have similar products, no one can recreate what I put into the world.
My brand is unique and my products are unique because I’m unique.
The effort I put into my business is what I can manage and I get out of my business what I’m able to put into it.
