We were lucky to catch up with G-Stylez recently and have shared our conversation below.
G-Stylez, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have made a ton of projects and all of them were meaningful in some way but I would have to say some of my more recent projects have felt more like I have finally hit my groove. My last two EP’s “D4RK T4LEZ” and “Retro84” have been some of my favorite work yet. I didn’t have any features and I worked with one producer on each project (AATMA on D4RK T4LEZ and Dirtybird B. on Retro84). I dug deep into storytelling on both of those projects with future music video/short films in mind. I have already filmed and released one called “HalfDead” about battling insomnia.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a rapper and producer for my own independent label, 8000 Feet Productions. I am also a host of a radio show called “G’s House Party” and of the web series Style Flip. As well as the host of the podcast “WORD!”. I got into the music industry at about age 12 or 13 and I slowly went from karaoke machine to studio equipment throughout the years. I was self taught and I still learn new skills of the trade everyday I’m in the studio. What sets me aside from most is my versatile style of music as well as being independent all the way around. I write, record, perform, promote, and most times produce my own content. I have also been directing, filming, acting, and editing my own music videos. I am proud of the collaborations with different genres i’ve done and learning new things to further my understanding of music in all aspects. I have successfully formed two music groups (8Grand and Stylez & the Blueprint) thanks to my team D.R.K. Beats, Chris Mares, and Alonzo Herrera aka RetroZo. I’m looking forward to future projects and hope you all follow along.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Listen or watch the content artists create and share it with others as much as possible. Remember all famous artists were once independent and they got that way from support. Instead of paying to see your favorite famous performer/s at $100 a pop three times a year try going to a few local shows and using some of that funding to support local art. You can still see your favorite artists but spread the love around.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I learned that just making a good song isn’t enough. You have to promote it to its full extent in order for it to be heard and successful. A lot of us have the mentality of “i’m gonna blow up” without even thinking of what to do with the content after its finished. You can’t just post on social media and call it a day you have to get out and spread the word through every possible venue as often as possible. There is so much content being released right now it is easy for yours to get buried in the mix. Which is why it is very important to promote as often and hard as possible. Make it like a full time job.
