We caught up with the brilliant and insightful G Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
G, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned to do stand up on accident honestly. Growing up, I came from a family where “roasting” or making fun of someone was normal. So you always had to keep a joke or two up your sleeve or you would quickly catch an onslaught of jokes. To speed up my process of comedy, I started watching comedy and studying the recipe of telling jokes. One skill that was most essential to my growth was stage presence. I learned to really takeover the stage. The energy you give on stage is the energy you are gonna get back from the crowd and I figured that out early. The obstacle’s that stood in the way of learning more was just …life. Life has a way of distracting you, and causing you to not put all your focus into your talent . However, you don’t really notice it because the talent is still there, but you aren’t watering it. Like you did when you first started. That’s why it’s always good to remember why and what you do it for. So you continuously keep growing as a person and in your craft.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into my industry as a last resort, I was in college and I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career. But I knew I wanted to do something that didn’t feel like work. I wanted to do something I loved to do. That’s what I think sets me apart from others. I love comedy. Even if I wasn’t a stand up comedian I would still wake up and strive to make people laugh. The thing I am most proud of is that fact that I don’t quit or give up. I never clock out of being a comedian, I love making the world laugh.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission and goal is to be a light to my friends and being a blessing to my family. I want everyone to feel free to be themselves.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Inspiring people is the biggest rewards. There has been a numerous amount of times where someone has came up to me after a show just to express their dreams to me. I want people to be ready to chase their dreams too!
