Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to G. A. Hauser. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
G. A., appreciate you joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
While working as a Seattle Police Officer I learned more about human nature and both the light and dark side of humanity. Not only was this a life lesson, I also use it in my writing.
I realized police officers wear many hats; protector, comforter, enforcer, and listener.
To know the life of a first responder of any kind, firemen, EMTs, paramedics, military men, etc, you must walk in their shoes. Criticizing, judging, or Monday Morning quarterbacking is ignorance.
While working on my two feature films and throughout my twenty years of writing fiction, this lesson has helped me deal with people, as well as creating characters that ring true.

G. A., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Decades ago, I was an avid reader of fiction. Sadly, I couldn’t find any gay man on man romance novels. The only gay books I was able to locate were either pornographic or Saturday afternoon specials, nothing in between. This frustrated me.
I have always been creative and interested in art and went to college for a fine arts degree in NYC. I wrote stories while in school, and although they amused me, I destroyed them upon completion because they were ‘naughty’. Finally in the mid 1990’s I began writing full-length novels to fill the gap between gay porn and closed bedroom doors. I wrote around a dozen novels, just for myself.
Then, I moved to London, and was able to write fulltime. I was urged to find a publisher. I did. Linden Bay Romance. But then, I had to convince the two female owners to trust me, and let me write gay romance for them. Needless to say, they were skeptical. But after my first novel was published with them, and they saw the desire for M/M romance, they accepted all thirteen of my novels, and published them.
That was the door opening to my own creativity and perhaps a new genre for mainstream fiction.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. In my small way, I hope to contribute to an understanding that love is love. That no matter whom you choose to love you will be safe and free of scorn. If I can change even one mind about same sex love and marriage, then I feel as if I have done well.
Sadly, ignorance has created a misconception of same sex love, and there are those who would destroy the progress we’ve made for sexual freedom.
I want to fight for that cause. I always have.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
For anyone who has tried to make a living from their art, we know the struggle is real. Beginning with a father who told me I was worthless and would never make it in a creative field, to fellow authors attempting to sabotage me by leaving poor reviews for books they never read, to cast and crew members of my films, battling me, discrediting me, and trying to derail the production of the movies, I cannot count the times I have been set back in life, let alone in my work as an author or movie producer.
Even after both my films were pirated, stolen again and again, I pushed on. I learned the lesson that this love of writing is in my soul. It can’t be destroyed by haters or critics. And my advice to those who are beginning is, don’t read the bad reviews, or if you do, take a nugget from them to learn from, and ignore the rest.
There will always be someone who is jealous of your work, your fire… my advice to you is never give up.
Maybe that was a lesson I learned in the police academy from my instructor. If you give up as a cop, you die.
